“Maybe this is just the level of chronic pain your body needs to get used to.”
That’s what a gynecologist once told Rachel Charlton-Dailey. Years later, she still hears it echo in her head.

For a decade, Rachel endured intense pelvic pain, wildly irregular cycles, countless scans, and doctors who dismissed her as “too young” or “emotional.” She was tested for PCOS and endo, switched birth control methods repeatedly, and even struggled with an IUD that worsened her symptoms. When she asked for a hysterectomy, she was told she was naive, irrational, and warned about a future partner’s wants more than her own pain.

“What about your partner?” “If you meet a man who wants children?”

At 27, she finally got the hysterectomy she had been pushing for. She doesn’t regret it, but her story underscores how many of us are gaslit, suspended between pain and disbelief.
