I've realized that a lot of people don't actually know what coaching is.
There is an assumption that it is crisis management for people with serious problems or dilemas.
Or that it is advice giving.
Or that it is therapy.
Or "new age" "self-help".
I don't know that there is a perfect analogy for it. But thinking of it on par with hiring a Personal Trainer might come close. We all get why you would hire a trainer or a coach in a physical context: there is a change you want to make and you don't know how; the ways you have been doing things haven't been getting you the results you are after; you want to learn a new sport or get better at one; you know you could be healthier, stronger, more balanced, and increase your stamina. So you hire a well trained expert who can assess where your body currently is, look at your current process, hear what your goals are, help you map out how to get from where you are to where you want to go, give you clear steps, monitor your progress, make adjustments to the plan as needed, and be there to celebrate with you when you hit your goals
A Coach does the same.
You know there is a change you want to make--find balance, figure out how to manage your time and energy; identify the ways you self-sabotage or get in your own way; tackle a goal; change a behavior pattern; apreciate all that you have while being in pursuit of what's next; feel strong, balanced, productive, peaceful.
Some of my clients find themselves overwhelmed by their responsibilities or recognize that they say yes to every request made of them which leaves no time for themselves.
I have clients who have been at war with their body--gaining and losing weight over and over and thinking they don't have enough willpower. They want to find a new approach and find peace.
I have clients who want to start a business or a creative project but don't and then feel frustrated and disappointed in themselves.
I have clients who achieve a lot, but never can celebrate those achievements because they constantly raise the bar on themselves and run themselves ragged trying to attain the thing that will finally make them happy.
Amazing talented people who are perfectionists who find themselves procrastinating.
My clients often see that they have patterns in relationships or with money or with food that keep them from getting to their goals, but can't quite break free of those habits.
Often my clients start from a place of vague dissatisfaction or regret or restlessness. They want more or different or better but can't quite figure it out.
So they hire a well-trained expert who can clarify where things stand, what the goals are, what's in the way, and create a plan to close the gap. And celebrate you as you make changes.
We all fall into thinking we want to make changes. And then we postpone...
