MRI's can be useful if your pain is unrelenting despite conservative care, including physical therapy and non narcotic pain medications, but ideally they should not be part of the initial workup of your pain symptoms.

Choose the right setting for care..
The wrong setting can be a financial pitfall (inpatient vs ambulatory surgical center vs office). Many pain related procedures that used to be done in the hospital or ambulatory surgical centers, can now be done in an office setting, at one third the cost. This case study demonstrates how.

Choose the right level of musculoskeletal (MSK) service.
The wrong level of MSK service (surgery vs not) can be critical.
>90% of patients can be treated without surgery. It requires persistence, and sticking to the program, but conservative care, in the form of good hands on physical therapy, the right medications, an injection if needed and someone to discuss your care plan with, can make a big difference in your care.
