Do you know the history of Juneteenth, Tribe?

Not the hashtag. Not the federal holiday. But the real story.

Juneteenth marks the day ~ June 19, 1865 ~ when the last group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free.

Two and a half years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. Two and a half years that they remained in bo***ge, working, suffering, surviving ~ because the people who held them chose not to tell them they were free!

So while Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, it’s also a stark reminder of just how tightly this country clung to slavery. Freedom wasn’t given, it was withheld.

That’s what makes Juneteenth powerful. It’s a story of delayed justice, but also of unshakable resilience. It speaks to the strength of our ancestors and the depth of cruelty they endured. It reveals both the resistance to our liberation and the fire that refused to be extinguished.

So yes, celebrate. Laugh. Dance. Rest. But also remember: Juneteenth isn’t just about what happened in 1865, it’s about how the echoes of that delay still shape our fight for justice today.

Because freedom that comes late is not freedom fulfilled. And we’re still not done.
