Very important and needed work being done in Jamaica for su***de awareness and prevention by Dr. Donovan Thomas and others. We met with Dr. Thomas in 2024 and discussed our work at SISFI, The Suicidality Institute, and The Suicidality Center and how we could collaborate on educational awareness and training efforts. More updates on those conversations and collaborations will come soon. It's important to note that the su***de rates in Jamaica has increased and with the devastating impacts of Hurricane Melissa, we expect it to play a very critical part of the emotional despair, struggles, and suffering people are and will be facing from it. More updates on our work in Jamaica soon. God bless.

Su***de is a complex public health issue resulting from an interaction of multiple factors; there is no single cause. The main causes are generally categorised as individual, relationship, community, and societal risk factors that converge to create a sense of overwhelming psychological pain and hopelessness.

For over twenty-five years, the Scudder Intervention Services Foundation Inc. ‘SISFI’ in New York, USA, has provided critical Emergency Management, Disaster Planning, and Crises and Trauma Response services and support for disasters in New York, across the United States, and across the world with various partner organizations as our focus on the psychological impacts of disasters with people in the ever-changing climate changes playing out in real time.

From the global events and impacts of 9/11, the Covid19 Pandemic, and the annual reoccurrences of natural disasters and hurricane season, we have been present in reminding society of the grave need to never forget to focus on people’s psychological state of healthy wellness and sanity.

Our focus has always been on the holistic impacts on people’s overall state of wellness, the trauma they experienced and its impacts on them, and subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder ‘PTSD’ that develops and often repeats and resurfaces every year at the date of the incident. Our ongoing study of the human toll and psychological impacts and effects of disasters every year from hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding, tornadoes, and fires and various types of natural disasters have proven our points of the deep and severe psychological impacts and the immediate urgency to see, understand it, and keep studying it.

These disasters, whether natural or man-made, creates real life and real-world challenges and of anxiety, despair, disruptions, fears, grief, loneliness, losses, struggles, and suffering on people whether directly or secondary that unchecked will lead to overall unhealthy outcomes. There are many people who are still struggling and suffering from the impacts of man-made and natural disasters for decades after events that changed their lives and lifestyles in ways that we can only understand through their eyes and emotions. We can easily rebuild infrastructures, but rebuilding lives is a different reality that cannot simply be done by moving people into them.

One thing we know for sure from our extensive work, is that the events and incidents of disasters are not only related to and impact those who are physically there, but also the secondary and vicarious trauma of loved ones and friends and families who have seen, heard, and witnessing the devastation and suffering of their loved ones as they are experiencing these events in real time.

Secondary Trauma can be more deadly and devastating than the actual experiences of loved ones and often comes with a sense of helplessness, hopelessness, and survivors guilt. Vicarious trauma is a very serious health challenge that requires open and authentic opportunities to share and release so people aren’t bottling up and keeping their emotions inside causing physical and psychological symptoms. Sometimes the physical health challenges and symptoms we hear and see are actually trauma and the subconscious mind being overwhelmed by it and causing changes in appetite, behaviors, moods, and sleep dysfunctions. When we understand the complexities of trauma, we can understand the behaviors and languages of it and effective and meaningful ways to help people experiencing it.

No one is exempt from the anxiety, despair, disruptions, fears, grief, loss, pain, and suffering from disasters that create serious and severe physical and psychological impacts, and the weight it holds on to us. It is critically important that focus must be simultaneously done on rebuilding infrastructure and lives to ensure healthy outcomes with minimal health, physical and psychological outcomes of the heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit of people as a whole.

This is the work the Scudder Intervention Services Foundation, Inc. ‘SISFI’ has been doing over the past twenty-five years, being the voice and presence of what and why the psychological state of survivors must be a very high priority across the board from the beginning and throughout recovery and rebuilding. As we see and face the death and devastation that Melissa left behind, our hearts and minds are heavy with the weight of the reality of what those on the ground on the island are facing and will be facing for decades.

We stand together with Jamaica as One People affected by the same disaster in many ways. We stand together with Jamaica as One Island an Island we Love, cherish, and hold near and dear to our hearts and in our minds no matter where we are in the world. And so, as we host these weekly recovery and trauma educational wellness discussions and trainings, we invite everyone who is interested or impacted to join us and be empowered, enlightened, and transformed by subject matter experts and practitioners in the behavioral health field.

We understand the cultural history and severity of generational trauma and mental health in the Caribbean, and most importantly, the mental health history and challenges of Jamaica from slavery.

We invite everyone to join in these sessions, whether you are directly impacted by the trauma or wanting to learn how to support loved ones, families and friends who are struggling and will be struggling for years to come. We welcome you to join. We welcome you as part of the conversation. We welcome you to learn. We ask and welcome you to share. We welcome you to be empowered with us as we take this journey together as One Jamaica, One People under One God.

The sessions will be facilitated by Mr. Kiffa A. Davis in Jamaica and Mr. Brett A. Scudder in New York, sons of the late Nurse Hope Palmer Davis from Sav La Mar. Join here https://bit.ly/4nQCS4V and please share with your networks so more people can be aware of the educational and wellness benefits.

We look forward to having you with us as we build on this effort to include toll free phone and local phone number for people to call in. Updates on phone numbers are forthcoming.

The subtle awakening of a new day comes with so many basic needs that when unmet, leads to chaos, madness, insanity, and unsettling emotions that triggers behaviors in many ways. Here are twenty critical life experiences males face every single day that are not clinical but adds or leads to physical and psychological health and wellness and societal construct challenges. This year we’re not hosting a physical event as we choose to join our partners globally in a virtual setting where we can all support each other in our respective countries. This year I have been invited to three global initiatives to head up Emotional Wellness and Healthy Lifestyles and elated at how they will magnify my reach and the knowledge and wisdom I carry. So, join us here https://bit.ly/3Vg7ild for this moment of togetherness standing with people who are living with pain and suicidality or lost loved ones to su***de. We often think of suicidality as a deficit in a person’s ability to manage their pain and suffering or heal from the trauma that caused them to be in pain, but we need to understand that sanity is more important than safety for someone experiencing chronic pain and suffering and how they see life, happiness, and peace in their suicidal mind. Sept. 19th, 1pm: Parenting Chronicles: Psychological Impacts of Technology and Social Media on Children/Youth Cognitive, Physical, and Psychological Health and Wellness. In a time where technology, social media, and AI, and the unfettered access to data and media are growing exponentially, there’s never a greater and more important time for parents to get very active and vigilant about the access and use of technology and social media in children, youth, and young adults. It’s today’s greatest threat to our physical and psychological health and wellness and the unlimited access to, integration, misuse, and misunderstanding affects our holistic health and best practices. Many parents are very challenged with ways in which to allow and over technology gadgets to their children and best practices in how they use them. There are many children who have been negatively and severely affected by technology and social media, and we need to talk more about this topic so they can learn and help in keeping their children and themselves safe and sane in these critical times with so many forms of trauma flowing through social media and technology. Join us here https://bit.ly/45RTH8H for this needed and real presentation and conversation.

Sept. 22nd, 1pm-2:30pm - Understanding Behaviors and Language of Debilitating Pain and Its Impacts on Cognitive, Physical, and Psychological Wellness” With a better understanding of how people experience and think of the aches and pain of their pain, we will be better and more effectively be able to treat and support them. Pain presents itself in various ways that often are misconstrued, misunderstood, and overlooked and we will talk about these language and behaviors that can help us recognize someone in deep crises and on the ledge of self-harm. Join us here https://bit.ly/4n3d4Tb for this interactive presentation and discussion and share with your networks.

Sept. 24th, 1pm-2:30pm - Pain Linguistics: “How Males Experience, Present, Process, Treat, and Talk About Their Pain Struggles and Suffering.” Pain is a language best spoken and understood by person experiencing it even when they may not be making sense of it and is incoherent, it’s still an experience of great discomfort and unsettling emotions. After twenty-five years of working with males of all ages and experiences with trauma that led to their pain, I understood quite clearly that males present and talk about their pain in a language not taught; but lived, and from those years and my own experiences with near death traumas and broken heart I too know and understand how hard it is and will be for males to be authentic and transparent in our pain and suffering. Join us here https://bit.ly/47gBcxc for this interactive presentation and discussion that will open your mind and give You a greater appreciation for hearing or helping males express their pain and suffering.

Sept. 26th, 1pm-2:30pm - Emotional Males Chronicles: “Nurturing True Strength, Healing and Wellness from Understanding, Accountability, and Transparency of Emotions, Pain, Loneliness, Trauma, and Vulnerabilities.” How often are males told they are too emotional, too sensitive, too dramatic, or too numb. How often do males have an opportunity to speak their truth authentically and transparently to their loved ones. The Emotional Male is a stigmatized person who is forced to shut in and shut down their emotions as a sign of weakness and femininity rather than strength, healing, and wellness. Join us here https://bit.ly/4p974u6 for this interactive presentation and discussion about the Emotional Male and the power and strength that comes from their pain and vulnerabilities.

Our Story

SISFI was formed from Mr. Brett A. Scudder’s lived experiences with these human conditions and needs after one of his su***de attempts in 2005 when he saw that there needed to be a better and different approach to serving people with humane, emotional and behavioral health services. He then decided to dedicate his life fulltime to helping people prevent and manage emotional pain, crisis, addiction, depression, loneliness, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder ‘PTSD’, su***de and trauma. He travels across the US to facilitate trainings for individuals, organizations and business on how to identify, understand and speak the language of emotional Pain and depression to help people connect with those who are suffering, struggling and hurting to prevent su***de ideations and completions. His work is highly respected, recognized and sought after in the field of su***de prevention. He constantly reminds us that we never know who is hurting, struggling and suffering and needs empathy, patience and understanding to connect on an emotional humane level.

We are truly humbled and honored by his openness and willingness to be vulnerable and transparent and creating this organization to be a change needed in our society today as more people are losing themselves to emotional pain causing mental health and emotional wellness challenges. Support our work and efforts to address su***de as a public health crisis where we are all impacted and affected directly and indirectly and need to be the Love we need for our own crisis and despair.
