IRIS PLATT: physical therapist specializing in pelvic health, black belt in karate, enjoys forgetting things at The Lab and coming back 5 min later to get them and say goodbye for real

It’s muscle Monday! Let’s talk about the infraspinatus! The infraspinatus is located on the back of the shoulder blade (scapula) and attaches to the head of the humerus. As one of the rotator cuff muscles, it helps provide stability and support to the glenohumeral joint aka shoulder joint. It also performs external rotation of the shoulder. Stayed tuned later for a movement snack!

It’s muscle Monday! What’s on the menu today? The gluteus medius aka the famous glute med!!
The glute med has a variety of important jobs but most notably stabilizing the hip and knee joints. It attaches to the Illium(hip bone) and to the femur (thigh bone) making it ideal for it to be able to abduct and externally rotate the hip. Stay tuned for a movement snack on Wednesday!

It’s muscle Monday! Let’s talk about the Masseter today aka our chewing muscle! The masseter muscle is one of the primary muscles of mastication, responsible for the elevation of the mandible and some protraction(protruding the jaw forward). The masseter muscle works in conjunction with two other jaw-closing muscles, the temporalis and the medial pterygoid, to close the jaw. So why do we care about the masseter? It’s because it can sometimes have a large role in jaw pain, and dysfunction, which can at times also lead to headaches. So us PTs also treat jaw pain! Stay tuned as always for a movement snack on Wednesday!

It’s muscle Monday! Today we’re talking about Flexor Hallucis Brevis! A foot intrinsic muscle and the little brother to flexor Hallucis longus. Flexor Hallucis Brevis attaches within the foot and helps with big toe flexion along with Flexor Hallucis longus (which attaches higher up in the lower leg). Stay tuned as always for a movement snack Wednesday!

It’s muscle Monday! Today we are learning about the extensor carpi siblings-Longus and Brevis! Extensor carpi radialis longus together with extensor carpi radialis brevis produce wrist extension and abduction (radial deviation). They can also help with elbow flexion since they attach to the humerus and cross the elbow joint. Stay tuned for a movement snack!

It’s muscle Monday!
We got a core muscle coming at you today! The external obliques sit on the side of your trunk attaching to the ribs and the top of your hips. We have one external oblique on each side. When engaged together they can help with forward bending, bracing, and stabilization. When only one side is engaged it performs side bending and trunk rotation. As always, stay tuned for a movement snack Wednesday!

It’s muscle Monday!
Let’s learn about the posterior tibialis! Often a muscle that is forgotten, it sits behind the tibia and wraps down the inside of the ankle where it then attaches to the navicular (a bone in your foot). This makes the posterior tibialis one of the most important muscles when it comes to supporting your arch. It also helps with inversion of the ankle (inward rotation of the foot and ankle) and with plantar flexion (pointing your foot). Stay tuned for a movement snack on Wednesday!
