What if there was a school where the skill of architectural drawing and detailing was taught, with classes on vernaculars - the original and newly developing. Wood frame construction was taught as well as steel fabrication , forging, braising, welding, casting, and carving in stone, wood and metal. Classes on Window and Door detailing and their fabrication. Classes on plants and gardens, drainage and grading. Classes on road and pathmaking. Classes on weathering, finishes and longevity. Classes on furniture building. A research library of drawings and wood and metal mouldings and of course a wood and metal shop. The program could be for example 4 years of drawing and study.
An apprenticeship construction program could begin after 2 years and then drafting afterwards for an additional 4 years in an accredited office. Finally to receive a certificate and Golden pencil after 8 years of hard work - the exam : the drawing and building of a small nondescript cottage alone within 4 weeks while sleeping in a tent - Including basic wiring and plumbing. The cottages would become student housing. Eventually maybe becoming a town as the alumni grew.
Absolutely no classes on Concept Development or Visionary Innovation and no classes on “describing your work” - that aspect would be left entirely to the student to pursue and keep private. Imagine the beautiful work that would come from them as they entered the work force - and the joy of builders and clients when they discovered that there were reliable and skilled people available to hire and work alongside. Let us all visualize this for one day perhaps it shall manifest and the built world could again become good again. Any refinement of this curriculum is welcomed as well as seed money to begin construction of the campus is welcomed. Tradeswomen, Tradespersons and Tradesbeings are of course included. Pick your favorite. ALL GOOD AT ATA.
