Fiber is an important part of your diet. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested by the body because it cannot be broken down into glucose, or sugar. Fiber regulates how the body uses sugars and helps keep hunger and blood sugar regulated.

There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and can help lower both glucose levels and blood cholesterol. Foods with soluble fiber include nuts, beans, oatmeal, and chia seeds. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and can help promote a regular digestive system. Foods with insoluble fiber include whole wheat foods, brown rice, legumes, pears, and apples. Both types of fiber may be naturally occurring in plants or are synthetically made and have a beneficial health impact in humans. (Harvard School of Public Health)

Instead of reaching for a Fiber One bar, drinking fruit juices, eating white rice/bread/pasta and meat, try adding almonds, chia seeds, whole grains, and beans or legumes to your diet and in your meals. I’m excited to share heart healthy recipes soon!

Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and less processed foods that have a lot of sugar and sodium!

The American Heart Association recommends no more than 9 tsp of sugar for men and 6 tsp for women. There are delicious healthier alternatives to your favorite processed snacks. There are fantastic ways to broaden your diet by learning how to make some things from scratch instead of from a box. (Y’all want some fun recipes?)

The AHA also recommends no more than 2,300 mg of salt per day, with the ideal daily limit set at 1,500 mg of sodium/day. (In the same screenshot, the AHA provides salt to sodium equivalencies).

It is important to consult your doctor regarding your dietary recommendations, especially if your goal is to prevent or manage chronic health issues.

✨Daily Positive Affirmations ✨

Sometimes the self-work you must do to keep our minds and bodies healthy begin with your attitude. That is, your attitude towards yourself, your support system, and your ability to maintain a wellness routine that fits your lifestyle. You may be used to beating yourself up for not picking a healthier meal choice, skipping your workout, or ignoring the doctor’s advice to help your chronic health condition. You sometimes might even blame someone else for your poor health choices.

Instead of waiting for Monday to kick off your new exercise routine and diet, start your wellness routine TODAY using positive affirmations. You will build a positive self image of yourself and be confident in your capability to take care of yourself healthily. You can choose to be thankful for your loved ones even though they don’t meet all of your (sometimes unreasonable) expectations.

I challenge my followers to start their wellness routine by stating a positive affirmation in the mirror TODAY. Tomorrow, write down two more in your journal or on a post it to put on your mirror. Practice new and creative ways of affirming and believing in yourself every week. You’ll be preparing your mind for your body to take action to becoming your best healthy self!
