Juneteenth- Freedom Day- Emancipation Day
Today, many people around our country, and indeed the world, celebrate Juneteenth: a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States of America.
In particular, on this day back in 1865, Union soldiers rode into Galveston, Texas and informed the populace that the (Civil) war had ended and all slaves were free, per executive order, as of January 1, 1863. As can be imagined, the year-and-a-half late announcement was met with shock, but most of all, jubilation.
On this day, let us reflect on our country's past, assess the present, and plan for the future. On such a commemoration, we might consider that we all hold the capacity to right our wrongs. We can manifest a more just society.
It starts in the hearts and minds of each one of us. It feels like love. It looks like courage.
