You may be wondering why Sophia is always covered in food.

While it is messy and a pain to clean up, I allow Sophia to touch and explore her food so that she can be comfortable with it.

Do you ever wonder why a child mouths everything? Children explore with their mouth, but before anything comes close to their mouths their hands prepare them for what they are about to feel. If they touch something hard, soft, wet, etc, they know what to expect when they bring it to their mouths.

So yes, the cleanup is a hassle, but in my eyes, it’s more than worth it.

If you only internalize one thing today, let it be this.

There is no better caregiver for your child, than you. Trust yourself to give your little one everything they need. Trust your little one to show you what they need.

If you want/need to hold them a little longer, do it!

If you want/need to rock them to sleep, do it!

If you want/need to give them some fries, do it!

I promise you will not ruin your child.

You are doing your absolute best and you are your child’s whole world. To them, you can do no wrong!

This is the main rule in all of my sessions!

We are all entitled to every emotion and every feeling that we experience. We are allowed to be happy, angry, frustrated, excited, upset, etc. However, just because we should feel and accept all of our feelings as valid, does not mean we get to behave in any way that we want.

Emotions happen to us but behaviors are our responses to those emotions. It is our job to validate our kids feelings but to also teach them how to react in response to them.

How do you help your child or clients regulate their behaviors when they are feeling a certain way? I’d love to see your responses below 👇🏻

How to help your child start chewing

When kids first start accepting food they typically use their tongue to mash the food to the roof of the mouth and then trigger a swallow. As children become a little older and are exposed to more varieties of foods (including different textures, consistencies and shapes) they have to develop a more mature chewing pattern.

Some kids need a little help when learning to chew. Here are some tips to help encourage a more mature chewing pattern in your little one.

👄 Make sure to present foods by your child’s molars instead of directly in the middle of their mouths and onto their tongues. This can sometimes cause a faster swallow trigger so the child won’t have a cue to chew.

👄 Provide finger length and width foods for your child to practice on. Sometimes a larger bolus (piece of food) can increase awareness and sensation in the oral cavity and facilitate a chew.

👄 Practice chewing with foods instead of on chew tubes and other non nutritive toys. This will allow for an easier and more functional transition when the child has to chew during mealtime.

👄 Model chewing for your little one. Over exaggerate your chew when sitting with them for mealtime.

👄 Allow your little one to try various textures of foods. This will help increase awareness of their oral cavity and can help with triggering a mature chewing pattern, as opposed to proving only purées.

👄 Be patient. This one is the most important one. Remember the more anxiety and stress around feeding, the less likely your child will eat.

How to reduce caregiver anxiety when introducing solids:

Take a CPR course to help you feel more confident during feedings

When making the choice between purées and BLW, choose the one you’re comfortable with. Don’t worry about what everyone else says!

Start with foods that dissolve or melt. This should help you feel a little less anxious.

Know the difference between choking and gagging! You can find more information on this in my previous blog and IG posts.

Does your little one like crackers?

Unfortunately most crackers, including teething crackers don’t have a ton of nutritional value. Here are some fun ways to add more nutrients to crackers!

These are all sweet potato 🍠 and banana 🍌 teething crackers (which we love) topped with:

•Sweet potato 🍠 and cinnamon purée

•Avocado 🥑 with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice

•Cottage cheese with melon 🍈 or any other fruit your little one likes.

•Peanut butter 🥜 with chia seeds

experience a moment of panic 😱when we hear our child cough when eating and automatically assume the worst.

Feeding is tough on anyone, but this is especially true for a new parent.

While you are completely justified in your fear, I hope this post helps ease some of that anxiety. We’re all in this together and just remember you’re doing your absolute best and killing it💥

Mom guilt is so real. Can I get an amen?
I will be the first to admit that yesterday I had some anxiety that Sophia hasn’t been reduplicated babbling yet.

I spoke to some amazing friends and colleagues who helped me see reason. Of course I thought as an SLP I wasn’t doing enough for my own child. Everyone I spoke to helped me realize that she is meeting all of her milestones in an appropriate manner and that all those monthly guidelines are a range.

Some kids develop certain skills sooner within that range and some towards the middle and end of that range.

When it comes to our own kids it’s hard to see reason and be logical, even when you work in the field. I’m doing my best, like we all are and Sophia is progressing beautifully. I wanted to post this as a reminder for any other mama who may be feeling the same way.

How to introduce allergens

As a parents introducing allergens can be extremely overwhelming. But here are some tips to help ease some of the anxiety around it.

Speak to your pediatrician about any concerns, such as a family history of allergy.

Introduce new foods, especially allergens early in the day, so that you can monitor your child’s reaction throughout the day.

Allow your child to play with the food and see if there is any physical reaction to the food prior to allowing them to consume it.

Have allergy medication on hand, in case of a reaction.

Ask your pediatrician what protocol to take if your child does have a reaction, so that you are prepared.
