Loving this resource from for my AAC Users to expand utterance length/complexity and include additional describing information! We investigated all the details about each photo and then used what we found and combined it into one descriptive sentence. Then, we used all of the details to compare and contrast to other animals 🤩

Loving this resource from for my AAC Users to expand utterance length and complexity and include additional describing information! We split up each category, combined it into one descriptive sentence. Then we used all of the details to compare and contrast to other animals 🤩

It has been a minute but I’m back!!! It has been such a busy year and I can’t wait to bring you all the knowledge I’ve gathered these past few months. I’ve been doing a deep dive into the world of Natural Language Acquisition and Gestalt Language Processing with and it’s been incredible, more to come on that in the near future!

For this post, I want to focus on the importance of capitalizing on the interests and motivators of your students/clients. This particular student LOVES glue, sensory activities, and just about anything sticky or that he can pull apart/peel. We also recently transitioned him onto a significantly larger grid size, which he has been picking up super quickly. When we create meaningful experiences with our clients, we are linking those moments to positive emotions and reinforcing the power of communication. We want our sessions to be fun, engaging and meaningful! Not only does this help support their memory of specific motor pathways, but it also helps build a strong rapport and client-clinician relationship! What’s one way you’ve incorporated the interests of a client into your sessions?

Hellooooo spring 👋🏼🌻🌷

—>> Is it just me or has everyone been feeling a little bit off this week?! One year ago, our world was flipped upside down. This pandemic has changed the lives of so many forever. My hearts ache for those who lost loved ones. It’s hard to think 365 days have gone by and we are all still dealing with this in full force.

—>> Let this post be a reminder to you that you are STRONG, resilient, and determined. There’s still more to this fight, but look how far we’ve come! It’s easy for us to get bogged down when we focus on the hardships and negatives, but let’s not forget all that we’ve overcome.

—>> Springtime is a new beginning. A new season filled with the sunlight we’ve been craving and new growth. As the end of the school year quickly approaches, I hope you take some time to acknowledge your personal growth over the course of this year.

—>> This year, I’ve started to truly grow into my own. I’ve become a more confident version of myself. I’ve started to make my health and well-being a priority (thanks !!). And I’m finding my place in the world. What have you learned this year?

Identifying Problem and Solution!

I love working on complex language skills during my sessions. Today, we used these brief passages to identify problem and solution.

I like to provide answer choices to my students and then fade the supports I provide as my students become more successful! I love that I can underline the answers within the passage and then write it out visually using a graphic organizer.

P.S. White boards are my favorite therapy tool 👯‍♀️

Following your client’s lead 💃🏻

This strategy is one we were taught in graduate school that aligns with a core pillar of DIR Floortime. Floortime is a relationship-based framework and approach for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It uses affect-based interactions and experiences which are then individualized to the client to promote overall development.

By engaging in pleasurable and developmentally appropriate interactions, this strengthens the relationship and supports the child’s overall development!

With this particular client, he often expresses interest in learning animal facts. So I followed his lead/interests and we read a book about Ospreys and a book about Eagles and then compared and contrasted the two! We were targeting his decoding and phonemic awareness, word recognition, story comprehension, identifying similarities and differences, as well as comparing and contrasting. He was extremely engaged and even asked to compare and contrast different animals next session!

☝️ Visual Supports 👍

Visual aides are an effective way to support comprehension, improve literacy skills, promote independence, and so much more!! 🌟

This could be a topic or choice board, a first-then board, a visual schedule, or a low tech communication board - the opportunities for using visuals are endless! 🤩 I use visual supports for all of my students, each with a different goal in mind! In addition to supporting comprehension and promoting individual independence, they can be used to manage/avoid challenging behaviors.

Schedules can assist students with transitions, allowing them to understand what is coming next and see it in a clear cut and visual format. By providing students with the concrete and clear visuals of what is coming next, we may reduce some of their anxiety about abstract and unknown concepts ✅

Think about how most of us use a calendar or an agenda book to keep track of important dates and projects, we would be lost without it right? Let’s provide our students with tools to be successful learners and support their needs! 👌

💭 What visual strategies and techniques do you use in your sessions or in your classroom? Let me know! ⬇️

If your methods and strategies aren’t working as well as you hoped, take a step back. Re-evaluate. Investigate. Think about what your child may need, how you can support them to achieve their goals. Follow their lead and watch the magic happen ✨

cause 🌧 and effect ☂

I love working on complex language skills during sessions. When I’m not creating my own passages with real world examples, I incorporate YouTube videos or picture scenes! Sometimes having a graphic organizer also supports my students to see their ideas in a more visual and concrete way.

How do you like to work on identifying cause and effect?? Let me know in the comments ⬇️
