"Though I’d been a nurse for thirty years, I didn’t know much about hospice. I thought it kind of hastens death, but then I saw how hospice embraced my dad and our family in the most supportive, spiritual way. At first, I found it difficult to keep my nose out of their business because I thought I knew better than they did about caring for my dad. He was no longer able to eat because he couldn’t swallow, so I thought he’d starve to death. I’d feed him, but then he’d vomit. His case manager asked if I was sneak-feeding him, and I discovered that, since he could no longer tolerate food, I was doing more harm than good. This is just to say how hard it was for me to step back. Today, I see families doing the same thing, and I totally understand.
