🔆As of today, our mission in Honduras🇭🇳 has successfully completed 5 open-heart surgeries and 12 catheterizations, and we aim to save an additional 6 lives. We feel privileged and grateful for the support of the local team.

Notably, Surgeons of Hope viewed this mission as an opportunity to invite Dr. Karla Castro, the Chief of the Cardiovascular Surgery Program at Costa Rica’s Children Hospital 🇨🇷. This invitation aims to promote a collaborative network among public hospitals in Central America.

🌟 We are incredibly proud to share two videos featuring our first patients from Honduras, Génesis (7 months old) and Delmi (1 year old)!

These two girls represent a significant milestone for us. As of late 2024, we partnered with Hospital María, the only pediatric hospital in Honduras, to collaborate on their cardiovascular surgical program led by Dr. Victor Paz. Tragically, we lost Dr. Paz, which inspired us to act quickly.

Thanks to our amazing sister organization, World Pediatrics that facilitated us logistics and local support, we brought in five specialists from Utah, including surgeon Dr. Eric Griffiths and our cardiologist Dr. John Breinholt from Pennsylvania.

This week, our goal is to perform nine complex open-heart surgeries and sixteen catheterizations. Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow! ❤️👏

The second image shows our lively patient, Florencia, waking up with a joyful appetite 😅. The first picture highlights the wonderful bond 😍 between our Surgeons of Hope team and local doctors! It's heartwarming to see such moments!

The mission of Surgeons of Hope in Paraguay has come to a successful conclusion. A heartfelt thank you to our Surgeons of Hope team: Christian Kreutzer (surgeon), Benjamin Chiostri (surgeon), and Rafael Fraire (critical care) for sharing your skills and bringing hope to Paraguay.

Day 3 Update from Paraguay

Meet our Patients of Hope: Isabella (8), Danna (2), Yamil (1 ), Martin (born two days ago).
As you can see from the photos, they are all sleeping as they recover from cardiac surgery. Generally, the younger the children are, the longer the doctors keep them sedated to prevent them from removing tubes and other medical equipment. They will soon awake.

But they are all expected to make full recoveries. 🎈

We have two more days---and four more lives to save---before this Surgeons of Hope mission comes to a close. With your help we can return and save more lives.

Day 2 Update from Paraguay.

We are thrilled to report that our medical team has successfully completed 4 surgeries during the first two days of our five-day mission to Paraguay.

Key highlights include:

❤️A baby born on August 31 in need of complex heart surgery received it thanks to Surgeons of Hope. Had our team not been there, Martin would likely would not have survived.

❤️Born with congenital heart defects, Danna (2 years old) Yamil (1 year old), Martin (1 day of life), and Isabella (8 years old), will soon leave the hospital with a new lease on life.

❤️Surgeons of Hope conducted the first Norwood surgery in Paraguay’s history, a complex open-heart surgery, typically performed on newborns with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). In this condition, the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. A remarkable milestone.

Nos emociona reportar que nuestro equipo ha logrado 4 exitosas cirugías en los primeros dos días de nuestra misión.

Puntos importantes:

❤️Un bebé que nació el 31 de Agosto con una condición muy compleja recibió su cirugía el día de hoy gracias a Surgeons of Hope. De no haber participado de esta jornada, Martín probablemente no hubiera sobrevivido.

❤️Todos con enfermedades congénitas del corazón: Danna (2 años), Yamil (1 año), Martín, (1 día de vida), e Isabella (8 años) pronto saldrán del hospital con un futuro brillante.

❤️Surgeons of Hope dirigió una ciugía de Norwood (primera vez ejecutada en Paraguay), la cual es una cirugía que se realiza en bebés recién nacidos con un síndrome de corazón izquierdo hipoplásico, una condición en la que el lado izquierdo del corazón no se desarrolla correctamente. Ciertamente esto es un hito.

This week in Asunción, Paraguay, Surgeons Cristian Kreutzer and Benjamin Chiostri and critical care specialist Rafael Fraire are performing 10 life-saving heart surgeries for children ages 2 months to 16 years.

We’re excited 🤩to share some wonderful news about our recent mission in Paraguay! Our amazing team, which included Dr. Christian Kreutzer (surgeon), Dr. Liliana Ferrin (cardiologist), Dr. Benjamin Chiostri (surgeon), and Dr. Rafael Fraire (intensivist), accomplished an incredible feat by performing 8 catheterizations and 8 open-heart surgeries. ❤❤❤

This marks the kickoff of a fantastic journey 🏃‍♀️with 8 missions planned, all aimed at boosting the surgical skills of local teams. As Dr. Kreutzer mentioned, “Our plan is to balance the cases we handle. We’ll take on half of the more complex surgeries while the other half gives us the chance to observe and guide local surgeons, helping them practice the techniques we've been working on in previous missions.” We can't wait to see the positive impact this project will have! 🌟

In 2019, we took action to support the cardiovascular program at the Hospital Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu in Paraguay. Since then, we have successfully saved the lives of 119 children and significantly impacted the health of hundreds more by training 19 local medical professionals.
Today, we are excited to announce the launch of our most ambitious project yet in Paraguay: the training of 6 pediatric cardiovascular surgeons, 13 cardiologists, 9 intensivists, and over 10 nurses. This groundbreaking initiative will compress five years of surgical and intensive care training into an intensive two-year program designed for the local medical team.
Starting next week, we will be performing open-heart surgeries for 10 children who are in urgent need of life-saving treatment.
We are determined to meet these ambitious goals, and we need your financial support to make it happen.

En 2019, tomamos medidas para apoyar el programa cardiovascular en el Hospital Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu en Paraguay. Desde entonces, hemos logrado salvar la vida de 119 niños y haber tenido un impacto significativo en la salud de cientos más mediante la capacitación de 19 profesionales médicos locales.
Hoy, nos complace anunciar el lanzamiento de nuestro proyecto más ambicioso hasta ahora en Paraguay: la capacitación de 6 cirujanos cardiovasculares pediátricos, 13 cardiólogos, 9 intensivistas y más de 10 enfermeros. Esta iniciativa innovadora comprimirá cinco años de capacitación en cirugía y cuidados intensivistas en un programa intensivo de dos años diseñado para el equipo médico local.
A partir de la próxima semana, realizaremos cirugías a corazón abierto para 10 niños que necesitan urgentemente un tratamiento que puede salvarles la vida.
Estamos decididos a cumplir estos objetivos ambiciosos y necesitamos tu apoyo económico para hacer que esto sea posible.

Our Mission

Surgeons of Hope strives to create a world in which every infant and child with a damaged heart has an equal opportunity to receive life-saving surgery.

Due to the complexity of pediatric heart disease, successful treatment depends on advanced medical facilities and highly-trained medical professionals. These are rarely available in developing countries due to a lack of resources.

Surgeons of Hope has developed a sustainable strategy to provide care to children in need of heart surgery.

We approach the need on three key fronts by giving urgently needed care, cultivating skills in local medical teams, and constructing centers of care in developing countries. Several studies on pediatric cardiology in developing countries have shown this to be the most sustainable approach.
