The REACH Institute

The REACH Institute REACH seeks to transform children’s health services by helping care providers use proven methods Expanding the “reach” of today’s knowledge is what we do.

According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science, it takes 18 years on average for medical innovations to reach patients. Shortening the wait for science to reach its intended beneficiaries greatly benefits families, communities and society as a whole. REACH and its scientific partners believe that this time lag can be reduced to less than 3 years, giving more than 3 million young people a real chance for happier, healthier and more productive lives. The discovery of even more effective treatments is what we hope for. Please join us in making certain that children and adolescents are not left waiting too long. REACH uses a four-step process to accelerate the time that it takes for state-of-art science to reach local communities:

* Identify and validate the highest-quality scientific findings
* Adapt these new interventions to make them family- and child-friendly
* Quickly disseminate and implement these proven interventions, and
* Empower local communities to sustain this change process through ongoing access to REACH’s latest programs, training materials and technical assistance

“Kids seldom come into your office and say, ‘I want to talk about bullying,’” explains REACH faculty member Ron Marino, DO/MPH. New on the REACH Mental Health Blog, Bullying & Pediatric Mental Health: What Primary Care Providers Should Know

“Often, as clinicians, the only indication we have that a child is being bullied are changes in their behavior or new mental health symptoms. It’s our job to notice these changes and take appropriate action.”

Standard medical training often falls short when it comes to equipping pediatric residents with the tools to address mental health concerns. This week, REACH led our inaugural Resident Education in Anxiety, Depression and Suicidality (READS) course, where a cohort of residency program faculty gained knowledge and resources to prepare the next generation of providers to confidently address mental health in primary care.

Empowering providers to provide effective mental health care early on in their careers changes the trajectory for the thousands of children and adolescents with mental health concerns that they'll encounter in their practices. We're grateful to this week's attendees for their commitment to support their residents with these life-changing skills!
