The REACH Institute

The REACH Institute REACH seeks to transform children’s health services by helping care providers use proven methods Expanding the “reach” of today’s knowledge is what we do.

According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science, it takes 18 years on average for medical innovations to reach patients. Shortening the wait for science to reach its intended beneficiaries greatly benefits families, communities and society as a whole. REACH and its scientific partners believe that this time lag can be reduced to less than 3 years, giving more than 3 million young people a real chance for happier, healthier and more productive lives. The discovery of even more effective treatments is what we hope for. Please join us in making certain that children and adolescents are not left waiting too long. REACH uses a four-step process to accelerate the time that it takes for state-of-art science to reach local communities:

* Identify and validate the highest-quality scientific findings
* Adapt these new interventions to make them family- and child-friendly
* Quickly disseminate and implement these proven interventions, and
* Empower local communities to sustain this change process through ongoing access to REACH’s latest programs, training materials and technical assistance

Standard medical training often falls short when it comes to equipping pediatric residents with the tools to address mental health concerns. This week, REACH led our inaugural Resident Education in Anxiety, Depression and Suicidality (READS) course, where a cohort of residency program faculty gained knowledge and resources to prepare the next generation of providers to confidently address mental health in primary care.

Empowering providers to provide effective mental health care early on in their careers changes the trajectory for the thousands of children and adolescents with mental health concerns that they'll encounter in their practices. We're grateful to this week's attendees for their commitment to support their residents with these life-changing skills!

This program equips clinicians with tools to recognize and respond to trauma, strengthening care for families in high-need regions. We’re grateful to Arizona Complete Health for partnering with REACH to expand access to culturally responsive, evidence-based mental health care.

Over three days, participants learned to assess and manage common pediatric mental health conditions with confidence. We look forward to seeing them in their follow-up calls as they continue transforming care for children and families.

According to Mental Health America’s latest report, in 2024, there were 320 individuals for every one mental health provider in the U.S. The report also reveals sobering trends among youth: Over half of youth (ages 12-17) with a major depressive episode (MDE) did not receive any treatment or counseling for depression in the past year.

With funding cuts impacting healthcare coverage and accessibility across the U.S., reports like these reaffirm the urgency of REACH’s mission – training primary care providers to deliver effective, evidence-based mental health care for those who need it most.

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor Indigenous histories, cultures, and resilience. At REACH, we also recognize the mental health disparities faced by Native communities, including limited access to culturally responsive care. We encourage providers to share the below resources with their communities:

New on the REACH Mental Health Blog! Adult ADHD: A Family Affair

"When a child comes into your office with ADHD, it's very likely in the family tree and potentially in the parent right there in front of you." More than half of adults with ADHD weren’t diagnosed until adulthood, missing critical early interventions and facing lasting impacts on work, relationships, and family life.

Dr. Kathleen McCoy, DNSc, who specializes in family psychiatric mental health and integrative care, shares what primary care providers need to know about recognizing and supporting adults with ADHD.

October is both Learning Disabilities Awareness Month and ADHD Awareness Month. To raise awareness, Understood has created an immersive platform called Through My Eyes.

This platform offers free resources for educators, featuring engaging simulations and powerful stories that bring to life the experiences of students with ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. It’s a valuable tool to build empathy and strengthen support for every learner.
