National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month began in 1987 with a simple but powerful idea: people with developmental disabilities belong in every part of our communities.
After decades of institutionalization, the focus began shifting toward something better, supporting individuals in living, learning, and working alongside their peers. The goal was not just awareness, but opportunity. Opportunity to participate, to contribute, and to be seen for the strengths each person brings.
That message still matters today.
When schools, clinicians, and communities work together to create inclusive environments, students with developmental disabilities have the chance to thrive. And when we build systems that support every learner, everyone benefits.
This month is a reminder that awareness is just the beginning. Inclusion is the goal.
