AHRC New York City

AHRC New York City Providing services for people with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities & their families. Cal AHRC New York City is a Chapter of The Arc New York.

Our Vision
A socially just world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. Our Mission
Advocate for people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities to lead full and equitable lives. Equity for People with Disabilities
We’re fiercely committed to achieving equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in New York City. At AHRC New York City we support more than 15,000 people annually under our guiding principle of equity for people with disabilities. We uphold the highest standards in supporting people to lead full and equitable lives and are part of a social justice movement grounded in our common humanity. Our 5,000 staff are devoted to the highest levels of excellence and innovation in all aspects of their work to actively create a world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. We’re meeting our objectives by not only providing supports to people with intellectual & developmental disabilities and their families, but by also calling for change in legislation and public policy, and advocating for better education, living arrangements, prospects for work and fuller lives in the community. We’re an over 75-year-old family governed organization, among the very best champions for people with disabilities in New York City and beyond. The number of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is great as are the inequities they face in a world that still perpetuates an “us and them” mentality. Now more than ever, we call upon government, corporations, foundations and the public to join us so we can effectively advocate and achieve equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

AHRC NYC advocates had a busy 2025 as critical legislation passed in the summer threatens disability services. Self-advocates, families, and staff members worked together to meet with state and federal representatives to inform them about our present and future issues and develop strategies to continue advocating in the months to come.

We’re so proud of Oluwasemilore “Semmy” Agunloye, a student at James P. Murphy Staten Island Prep. Semmy was selected as the school’s winner for Senator Andrew Lanza’s annual There Ought to Be a Law Essay Contest. Semmy’s essay propose a law requiring schools to serve healthier meals and free fruit and vegetable choices for students.

A special thank you to teacher Arijeta Demirovic and the instructional team of Classroom 10 for their exceptional support in guiding students through the essay writing process.

Well done, Semmy! 👏🥳

Celebrating the holiday season at AHRC NYC led to an unexpected and heartwarming reunion between two men who had not seen each other in decades.

Last week, our Residential Services department held one of its annual regional holiday parties at the Staaten, a local catering hall. Residents from Staten Island and Brooklyn were in attendance and had a wonderful time with their peers as well as with staff and leadership.

As guests were gathering their things to leave, two gentleman saw each other in the lobby. Anthony Harris (pictured on the left), said to Residential Coordinator Nyoka Simmons (middle) "I know him"!

Nyoka replied, "From where?”

“From Willowbrook,” Anthony said, referencing the state-run institution whose closing ushered in the modern era of community-based disability services.

Segg Bland (pictured right), who resides at the Bober residence in Brooklyn, looked over and said, "Yes we were roommates!!!” Tears from staff members followed as the two embraced.

Mr. Bland has been with AHRC 1993, while Mr. Harris joined our Residential Services in 2018, living at Harbor Road residence in Staten Island.

Of his journey from Willowbrook to community living, Mr. Harris said, " I'm not ashamed of being from that place. I'm really not.”

The chilliest weather of the season so far 🥶🥶🥶didn’t faze the athletes from Special Olympics in Staten Island! Our own Alfred Ha, who has worked in the AHRC NYC mailroom for many years, & Kristin Thatcher, a longtime self-advocate, braved the cold waters to raise awareness and support for sportsmen and women with disabilities. Way to go! 🏊🥳👏

Today, December 3rd, is the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Despite tremendous global progress in disability health and equity made since the UN’s founding in 1945, persons with disabilities still face significant societal barriers, especially in finding stable and fulfilling employment.

AHRC NYC’s Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) is a public-private partnership fostering diversity and inclusive hiring within New York City and State government. Last week, we proudly celebrated placing 250 total interns in NYC government, spread among 16 city agency partners, with 320 average hours per internship. More than 40% of interns have moved into competitive employment. Now funded as a demonstration project through NYC talent, PII partners with New York State ACCES-VR and the NYS Commission for the Blind to support participants and help agencies host interns effectively.

AHRC NYC is extraordinarily proud of the PII program’s success. We thank every intern for their hard work and remain grateful to our city and state partners for their continued partnership and commitment to inclusive workplaces.

Tomorrow, we’re joining New York Disability Advocates at the NYS Capitol to call on Governor Kathy Hochul to enact our CareForce Affordability Agenda and financial protections for the I/DD community, including our staff who work hard to support New Yorkers with disabilities.

It’s time to make our voices heard and ensure providers and staff have the resources they need to deliver quality care.
