Ong Family History

Ong Family History This page is dedicated to the genealogy and history of the Ong family, originally of Suffolk, England, with records dating from as early as ca. 1280 AD.

The Ong Family History page follows in the footsteps of "The Ong Family of America" by Albert R. Ong, A.M., M.D. (1846-1906), published in Martins Ferry, Ohio in 1906. Dr. Ong's work, published posthumously, is remarkable for its time and is a treasured resource, especially for its complete transcript of the 1905 Ong Family Reunion held in Smithfield, Ohio in 1905. But our access to early records is far superior to the reach of a small-town doctor from the early 20th century, and this page will focus especially on the early English period, Colonial America, and U.S. history up to the Civil War. But anything relating to the Ong family at any time is within scope! We welcome all comments. The editor may also be contacted off-line at ongfamilyhistory@gmail.com. John F.H. Ong

Your Editor this past Monday at long last made the pilgrimage to Barningham in Suffolk, the village with the oldest Ong(e) family roots. I arrived in time for a sandwich and a pint at the local pub, the Royal George, and enjoyed a conversation with some modern-day Barningham gents. I then walked across the road to the Cricket Meadow, now the village park and once called Ong’s Close in an earlier existence as a field. Then on to St Andrew’s Church next door whose west tower was built in part through a bequest by Adam Onge in 1439. I was not the first 21st century Ong to sign the visitor’s book and hopefully I won’t be the last. I spent the rest of the afternoon driving through the area and the surrounding villages, all of which had Ongs living in them at one point or another. I look forward to a return (and longer) visit to Suffolk!

The Editor is ever grateful to the many women who over the centuries chose our surname via matrimony. One of these great Mrs Ongs just retired after a quarter century teaching drama and directing theatre at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio.

Last night your Editor enjoyed meeting his fifth-cousin-once-removed, Darlene Ong, in person for the first time, although we have been corresponding for a decade. Our common ancestors are Jacob Ong, of Ohio Yearly Meeting House fame, and his wife Mary McGrew Ong, both born about 200 years before we were. Darlene is one of the first persons I reached out to when I started trying to link up with distant cousins through social media. What a blessing the world getting smaller has been!

On this day we again remember Frances Onge, progenetrix of the Ongs in America, buried in Watertown, Massachusetts 385 years ago today (Nov. 12, 1638), at age 55, seven years and nine months after her family's arrival in the colony.

Your Editor asked ChatGPT to summarize the work of Walter J. Ong (1912-2003). Here is the response:

Walter J. Ong was a prominent American scholar and cultural historian known for his significant contributions to the field of media and communication studies. He explored the profound impact of oral and written communication on human consciousness and culture.

Ong's work emphasized the transition from oral to written culture and the transformative effects it had on human cognition. He argued that oral cultures, characterized by primary oral communication and the absence of writing, fostered a different mode of thought and memory compared to literate cultures.

In his influential book, "Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the Word," Ong explored how writing fundamentally altered human consciousness, introducing abstract thought, analytical reasoning, and the ability to preserve and transmit knowledge across time and space. He emphasized that writing enabled a shift from the holistic, participatory nature of oral traditions to more linear, detached modes of thinking.

Ong also examined the impact of other forms of media, such as print, electronic, and digital technologies, on human cognition and culture. He argued that each medium shapes our perception of reality and influences the way we think, learn, and communicate.

Additionally, Ong delved into the concept of "secondary orality," referring to the oral-like characteristics of modern electronic media, such as television, radio, and the internet. He discussed how these media platforms, while seemingly written or visual, engage individuals in an interactive, participatory manner similar to oral discourse.

Overall, Ong's work shed light on the profound influence of communication technologies on human consciousness and culture, highlighting the importance of understanding the historical and cultural contexts in which they arise. His ideas continue to shape and inform the study of media and communication in various academic disciplines.
