SoWell Apple Pie
1 cup water, milk or milk alternative
1 serving vanilla protein powder
½ cup Greek yogurt, cottage cheese or silken tofu

No surprise here, research on weight management in menopause is lacking (so frustrating how little we specifically study the female population!), but we do know that between the ages of 50-60, women, on average, will gain over 1.5 pounds a year. These are three of the biggest hormonal culprits (and what to do about it) ⬇️

•Insulin — In peri/menopause, there is an increase in insulin resistance, even independent of weight gain. Insulin is a fat storage and hunger hormone, so the higher levels of insulin being pumped out to hand blood sugar can lead to weight gain. My favorite tool for testing early insulin resistance is the HOMA-IR score (uses fasting insulin and glucose). Lower carbohydrate diet modifications, more movement and medication (from metformin to GLP-1s) can make a big impact fighting insulin resistance.

•Testosterone — When estrogen levels drop in menopause, the amount of available (unbound) testosterone increases, which is tied to visceral (aka abdominal) fat accumulation. Estrogen HRT can help counterbalance this hormonal imbalance.

•Leptin — Leptin is a fullness hormone that communicates with the brain to keep a balance of healthy fat stores. But, in peri/menopause, declining estrogen levels can lead to leptin resistance and make it harder for your brain to receive the signal to be full and stop eating. To add insult to injury, significant leptin resistance is also tied to hot flashes. The best way to keep leptin resistance at bay is to minimize ultra-processed food and focus on quality sleep and strength training.
