The truth is, that dealing with a miscarriage or fetal abnormality is never easy. A miscarriage (also called an early-trimester miscarriage) occurs when a baby dies in the womb (womb) before the 20th week of pregnancy. For women who know they are pregnant, about 10 to 15 out of every 100 pregnancies (10 to 15 percent) end in a miscarriage. Most miscarriages occur in the first trimester before the 12th week of pregnancy. But we can help. Every woman who walks through our doors finds solace and comfort in our quality nursing facilities while enjoying the highest quality service and personal and compassionate care. We understand the emotional and physical difficulties women face during this difficult time, so we have developed patient-specific programs designed to meet the needs of each patient.

Miscarriage aftercare:
Your comfort, trust, and safety are our top priorities. Our staff works hard to make this as stress-free as possible and will provide you with everything you need for your miscarriage follow-up care. Our team of board-certified physicians, anesthesiologists, and nurses has been helping women for years. We maintain the status of AAAASF surgical facilities through routine inspections so you can feel confident in your surgical and anesthesia care. We are a private practice, allowing us to provide you with the utmost care, sensitivity, and attention to the smallest details. Every step of the way with us, from the time you walk in until you are fully recovered, there is someone to talk to, listen to, and support you. As a priority patient, there will be no crowded waiting rooms. Instead, you'll find yourself in a private room with a luxurious mahogany bed, oil painting, internet, and TV, with complete privacy and comfort. You will receive personalized care from our dedicated staff and have a counselor by your side to help you through this difficult time.

What is an early abortion?
Premature termination of pregnancy refers to the termination of pregnancy during the first trimester (within the first 12-14 weeks of pregnancy). Early-stage abortions require less medical and follow-up care than late-term abortions, making them more affordable than late-term abortions.

Pregnancy is in its earliest stages in the first trimester, which provides a variety of abortion options. If the pregnancy is less than 10 weeks (measured from the first day of the last menstrual period and confirmed by ultrasound in our clinic), early miscarriage can be surgical or medical. The possibility of medical termination of pregnancy, also known as medical termination of pregnancy, is a particular advantage of early termination of pregnancy. After 10 weeks, medical-only abortion is no longer possible, and abortions at this stage require surgical intervention.

Surgical Abortion:
Early surgical abortion terminates a pregnancy in the first trimester. Compared to medical abortion, surgical abortion can be performed in our clinic for up to 22 weeks. However, susurgical abortion performed at 12 weeks or earlier (first trimester) is cheaper and has a lower risk of complications.

Surgical abortion for the first trimester is performed in a clinic with local anesthesia and optional oral or intravenous pain medication. During this procedure, a speculum is inserted into the va**na, the cervix (opening of the uterus) is slightly dilated, and a small tube is inserted to remove the pregnancy by suction (or vacuum). The process usually only takes 5-10 minutes.

During a surgical abortion and for a short time after surgery, patients may experience severe cramping. Bleeding and spotting usually occur days or weeks after surgery.

After a surgical abortion, our health educators instruct patients on how to take care of their bodies after surgery. Doctors also prescribe antibiotics and birth control pills if needed.

Follow-up care is not required after surgical termination of pregnancy unless there are complications related to termination. Patients are encouraged to schedule appointments with their regular physicians for annual Pap smears, physical/pelvic exams, and birth control supplement requests.

No woman should die of Cervical cancer, screening leads to fewer deaths. For women between the ages of 21 to 29, it is recommended that you have Pap tests every three years. During a pap test, a doctor or a nurse will collect cells for the Pap test during the exam. The Pap test can help find abnormal cells that may develop into cancer if left untreated. For women between the ages of 30 to 65, you have 2 options which you can decide together with your doctor which would the best for you. You have the choice of doing a Pap test every three years or a Pap test plus an HPV test every five years. The HPV test can find the HPV virus by testing cells collected at the same time as a Pap test.

Women should be examined as recommended. More frequent screening does not provide better protection.
1. Some women may need a different screening plan based on their health history.
2. Women over 65 should ask their doctor if they need to continue screening.
3. Women should talk to their doctors and nurses to find out about their screening results.
4. Women who receive the HPV vaccine should still start screening at age 21.

Test Results:
It may take up to three weeks to receive your test results. If your tests show a problem, your doctor will contact you and find out the best way forward. There are many reasons why test results may be abnormal. This does not usually mean you have cancer.

If your test results show abnormal cells that could become cancerous, your doctor will tell you if you need treatment. In most cases, treatment can prevent cervical cancer from developing. Be sure to contact your doctor right away to learn more about your test results and to get any treatment you may need.

If your test results are normal, your chance of developing cervical cancer in the next few years is very small. Your doctor may tell you that you can wait several years for your next cervical cancer screening test. However, you should see your doctor regularly for check-ups.

Eastside Gynecology specializes in early abortion methods. We offer suction abortion, also known as manual vacuum aspiration (MVA), between 5 and 9 weeks of pregnancy. This is one of the most minor invasive procedures we offer. MVA is performed with a mini handheld vacuum that produces gentle suction. The process takes about 5 minutes and requires no electronic machinery and no scratching. You can choose to have local anesthesia in the exam room or general anesthesia in the operating room. If you choose general anesthesia, you will be asleep during the abortion and your caregivers will not be allowed into the operating room. With minimal follow-up or recovery time, you can leave the office and resume normal activities. Before you decide which type of anesthesia you would like to proceed with you should know that general anesthesia is when the patient remains asleep during the entire abortion procedure. The patient may feel some discomfort upon awakening, like menstrual cramps. Compared local anesthesia, is when medication is administered to numb the cervix. During the procedure, the patient will feel some discomfort resembling menstrual cramps.

What to Expect at Home: Your Recovery Activity
1. Rest when tired.
2. Getting enough sleep can help you recover.
3. Most women can return to normal activities 1 to 2 days after surgery.
4. Ask your doctor when you can resume vigorous exercise.

Diet:
1. You can eat your normal diet.
2. If you have an upset stomach, try bland, low-fat foods like white rice, grilled chicken, toast, and yogurt.

Medicines:
1. Your doctor will tell you when you can start taking your medicine again.
2. You will also receive instructions about taking your new medicine.
3. If you take aspirin or other blood thinners, ask your doctor when you should start taking them again.
4. Make sure you fully understand what your doctor expects of you. If your doctor prescribes antibiotics for you, take them as directed. Don't stop taking it just because you feel better. You must take the entire course of antibiotics.

In-Clinic Pregnancy Testing

A pregnancy test is an important tool. Knowing you are pregnant early on can help you make decisions that are right for you. We offer two types of pregnancy tests in our clinic: urine and blood. A pregnancy test checks your blood or urine for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This is a hormone produced by the placenta (the placenta carries oxygen and nutrients from your blood to your developing baby throughout pregnancy). Blood and urine levels of hCG rise sharply during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, then drop to low levels for the rest of the pregnancy.

Urine Pregnancy Test
We offer quick and easy pregnancy testing at our clinic, which can be as simple as a urine test. We will test your urine for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG is released when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. HCG is only found in a woman’s body if she is pregnant. You will be asked to urinate in a plastic cup. Plastic cup or something similar. We will then test the urine using a kit that may look like a home pregnancy test kit.

Blood Pregnancy Test

We can do a blood test for you as early as 11-14 days after ovulation. For a blood test, we will draw blood from a vein in your arm. The blood is sent to a laboratory for testing. Most blood test results take at least a few days. The laboratory then informs the clinic of the results. Blood test results are about 99 percent accurate and can detect lower levels of hCG than urine pregnancy tests. The two main types of blood pregnancy tests include:

Quantitative blood test – measures the exact amount of hCG in the blood and can give you an estimate of how far along the pregnancy has progressed.

Qualitative blood test – only checks for the presence of hCG. Since this test doesn’t measure the exact levels of hCG, it can’t offer an estimate of gestation.

Information About the Abortion Pill

Some women prefer to use medication to terminate their pregnancy because it can be used in early pregnancy. It can be used at home. It feels more natural, like a miscarriage. It is less invasive than in-hospital abortion. Medications can be used to end an early pregnancy. In many cases, it must be less than 9 weeks from the first day of your last period. If you are more than 9 weeks pregnant, you can have an abortion in the clinic. Medical abortions in some clinics take longer than 9 weeks. If you decide to take the abortion Pill you must be sure of your decision because if you stop taking them, it does increase your chances of very high risk for birth defects. If you decide to use the abortion pill you will be given doses of Mifeprex (Mifepristone) or RU-486 administered in the office and taken by mouth. You will then be given instructions on how to take your second medication Cytotec (misoprostol) to take home.

You Should Not Take the Abortion Pill If:
1. You are over 9 weeks pregnant (this is based on the start of your last period)
2. You suffer from blood clotting disorder or adrenal failure
3. If you have an IUD, it should be removed before taking the pill
4. Have a known allergy to medications that are used to end pregnancy
5. Take any medications that may contradict the abortion pill

What You Need to Know:
1. Have a physical exam and ultrasound with a doctor to confirm pregnancy
2. Go over your medical history
3. Get blood work and urine test
4. Sign consent forms and be thoroughly explained how the abortion pill works
