Welcome our summer intern!

I’m Andrea Salazar, a summer intern and undergraduate at Texas Christian University studying speech language pathology and minoring in child development. At Talk the Talk, I assist therapist with generic lesson plans, scheduling and social media.

Swipe to learn about the link between numbers and aphasia. A speech-language pathologist can help people with aphasia improve their number communication skills. They will assess where breakdowns in number processing occur and design a treatment program to practice these skills. By mastering one type of number at a time – learning the rules while working up the hierarchy of difficulty – people with aphasia can become faster and more efficient with numbers. Home practice is the best way to get the required intensity to change the brain when time with a therapist is limited.

Speech disorder spotlight: articulation. Articulation is the process humans go through to produce sounds, syllables and words. A child with articulation disorder may be unable to produce certain sounds or form particular sounds incorrectly. It can make the child’s speech hard to understand and affect socialization and learning. Articulation disorder occurs in children and will last into adulthood if untreated. For unknown reasons, it’s more common in boys than girls. Swipe to learn more!

Speech-language pathologists who work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit have one of the most difficult and important roles in the field. NICU SLPs need to be experts in diagnosing and understanding child development processes because their patients are far too young to communicate with and are unable to directly express their symptoms and feelings. It seems ironic that speech-language pathologists can help newborns unable to speak, but SLPs are the specialists most familiar with swallowing disorders that can affect a baby’s ability to consume food during the vital early weeks and months of growth. All premature babies are at risk of experiencing feeding difficulties and approximately 13% of all births in the US are pre-term. The addition of SLPs to NICU is relatively new and the role is still developing, but SLPs may be among the first to see a medically-stable neonate. SLPs in the NICU work as closely with parents as they do infants; they educate, counsel, and empower them. 🤰👩‍🍼👶

Dyslexia is a reading disorder that primarily causes children to read the letters in words in an incorrect order. However, did you know that the root of dyslexia actually has little to do with how children mentally order letters? Rather, dyslexia has a lot more to do with how children think of speech sounds.

To read, we match speech sounds to their corresponding letters. When there is a faulty mental representation of speech sounds, the processing of letters and reading are also impacted, which show up in the dyslexic symptom of the incorrect ordering of letters.

Abbey Nicole Curran’s teacher laughed in her face when she said she wanted to compete in a local beauty pageant. “Oh Abbey, be realistic, you can’t do that!” her teacher said.

Abbey has cerebral palsy, which is a motor disorder that causes muscle weakness, affecting primarily a person’s ability to move and their ability to produce speech. She underwent surgeries to correct her heel and attended extensive physical therapy. Despite the ridicule she faced and the fact that she still walks with a limp, she registered for the Miss U.S.A. pageant and won home the Miss Iowa trophy in 2008, making history as the first ever disabled woman to register and win the contest.

She wants to prove to everyone who doubted her and other disabled entrants as well as the disabled community that “there’s no reason you can’t enter a pageant, or go to dance class, or achieve whatever it is you want to achieve.”

The McGurk effect is an illusion induced by a mismatch in the speech sound between the auditory cues heard and the visual cues afforded (thinking you heard da da da due to seeing a person’s mouth movements suggesting so, when the audio signal is in fact playing ba ba ba). What the McGurk effect illustrates is the importance of auditory and visual signal integration, and it explains why lip reading is often difficult and can be imprecise. Therefore, if your child has hearing loss or some other condition affecting their hearing, lip reading and hearing technology alone may still pose challenges to communication. American Sign Language, augmentative and alternative communication (covered in a previous post), and other methods of communication should also be considered to assist your child.
