I love how simply tuning into something so simple as the breath can bring us home.

Ancient Language
Hannah Stephenson

If you stand at the edge of the forest
and stare into it
every tree at the edge will blow a little extra
oxygen toward you

It has been proven
Leaves have admitted it

The pines I have known
have been especially candid

One said
that all breath in this world
is roped together

that breathing is
the most ancient language

There is a growing body of research that is showing the benefits of being in nature.

Of course many of us know this intuitively, we have been drawn to nature in part because we feel better when we're in nature.

A growing body of research points to the beneficial effects that exposure to the natural world has on health, reducing stress and promoting healing. Now, policymakers, employers, and healthcare providers are increasingly considering the human need for nature in how they plan and operate.

It was a true joy to embark on a journey to the breathtaking landscapes of Costa Rica, a land where the motto "Pura Vida" isn't just a saying, but a way of life. Translating to “simple life" or "pure life," this phrase imbued my experiences.

During my stay, I had the opportunity to explore the Pacific Coast, where I was greeted by lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and an abundance of wildlife. Each day, I embarked on excursions to various national parks, each a treasure trove of natural wonders.

One of the highlights of my trip was a guided rainforest animal tour led by the knowledgeable Juan Carlos. As we ventured deep into the heart of the rainforest, I was mesmerized by sightings of three-toed sloths, a venomous snake, a majestic boa constrictor, tapirs, and colorful tree frogs. Juan Carlos's passion for wildlife conservation was evident as he shared insights about the importance of protecting Costa Rica's rich biodiversity.

Costa Rica's commitment to conservation was palpable throughout my journey. Approximately 28% of the country's land is protected as national parks, reserves, and wildlife refuges, a testament to the government's dedication to preserving its natural heritage. It's no surprise that tourism, fueled by the country's stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems, is Costa Rica's primary source of revenue.

From zip-lining through the canopy to swimming in cascading waterfalls, Costa Rica offers a plethora of exhilarating activities for adventure enthusiasts. Yet, amidst the adrenaline-fueled adventures, there's a sense of tranquility and harmony with nature that permeates every experience.

As I immersed myself in the local culture, I couldn't help but inquire about the impact of tourism on the community. "We like it. Tourism means jobs," remarked my cab driver, David, echoing the sentiments of many Costa Ricans who rely on the industry for their livelihoods.

However, it wasn't just the breathtaking landscapes that left a lasting impression on me; it was the warmth and kindness of the Costa Rican people. Interactions with locals reminded me of the essence of "Pura Vida" – a celebration of the goodness of life and a reminder to embrace every moment with gratitude and joy.

Reflecting on my journey, I can't quite articulate how, but I know that this trip to Costa Rica has left an indelible mark on my soul. It's a place where nature's beauty intertwines with the spirit of its people, leaving visitors like myself forever changed by the magic of the "Pura Vida" lifestyle. It is my fervent hope to lead a retreat here one day, sharing the magic of this "Pura Vida" lifestyle with others.

I am an eclectic seeker. I'm very curious about what makes life better and what doesn't, many of you know that already.

About 7 years ago I learned a practice that changed my life and the way I show up. It brought deep healing. It cultivated a sense of self-acceptance, belonging, and kindness. The practice I'm talking about is mindfulness meditation.

Mindfulness meditation is an invitation to pay attention to what’s here—often the inner experience of emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations.

The practice offers the opportunity to understand ourselves better, uproot harmful patterns, and see life in a fresh way.
I am currently in the midst of a two-year mindfulness teacher certification program with the University of California Berkeley. As part of the certification process, I'm required to offer two practicums. My first practicum is The Nature of Kind Attention. It is a four-week course where you'll be guided through meditation experiments and discover the impact for yourself. The course is imbued with kindness, playfulness, and eclectic wisdom—very Laura-esque!!!

Personally, I've found this practice key in helping to create a more beautiful world from the inside out. The course is free and there are 8 spots available. Classes are Wednesday’s 12pm CST beginning March 16th! 💚✨🎉

Why are many of us drawn to nature? 🌲 Why does nature inspire? Evoke a sense of awe and mystery? ✨

Many of us feel energized or inspired after going for a walk or sitting under a tree reading. 🌳😌

Over the years these topics have been so interesting to me that I've now begun to write more and more about it. On my blog I cover 5 ways nature is good for us!

So if you need a reason to get outside check out the link below. Very first blog on my new website!!!

Sometimes the simplest experiences in nature are most inspiring and healing.

Walking this morning. Frost still on the Earth sparkles in the sun reminded me of the magic of life. Sun shining on dew.

The great unthaw of winter.

The rising of the sun.

The budding of life potential in spring.

The flowing nature of water.

I've always delighted in the equinoxes—this curious time of year where the Earth pauses between this and that—on the cusp—open space for beginnings and endings.

I find these "in between" spaces to be powerful opportunities to let something go and begin again. Spring equinox—bridge of winter to spring. Dawn—the bridge of night and dark. Mushrooms—bridge between life and death. Trees—the bridge of sky and earth. And here in this photo the bridging of ice and water.

So I think about what I'm ready to let go of during this time. And what I want to set in motion. And I begin to learn that letting go and opening to possibility go hand in hand.

“I am a human being meant to be in perpetual becoming. If I am living bravely my entire life will become a million deaths and rebirths.” Glennon Doyle

This weekend I celebrated my birthday—I'm an equinox kid! My mom and I went for a hike to celebrate. Saw this little creature!

Visited this area in October—gorgeous!

As you hike through this forest, you'll encounter trees that are up to 400 years old - older than Minnesota's statehood!

’m not creative—that’s something I believed about myself. But, it’s been frequently said that creativity is like a river flowing—something that just happens when boulders are removed whether it’s through writing, parenting, painting, cooking, interior decorating, teaching, public speaking, or running a business.

How creativity expresses itself can be totally unique to the individual and it’s not unusual to encounter blockages such as fear, doubt, and vulnerability throughout any stage of the process. Being engaged in a creative endeavor can reveal insights about life, spirituality, connection, and joy. In this four week series, you’ll have the opportunity to release blockages to creativity and open the creative channels through Kundalini Yoga and moon cycles. You’ll build awareness around your own unique cycles in the creative process and learn how to flow with creativity in a brave, authentic, and wild way.
Nov 30th-Dec 21st (4 Mondays) 7-8:30 CST
