Founded in 1971, The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP) is one of the oldest and largest Psychotherapy Institutes in NYC. We offer training programs for new and experienced clinicians to learn more specialized and advanced forms of treatment. Our graduates’ professional endeavors are greatly enhanced by the training they r

eceive at ICP. ICP offers a full range of psychotherapeutic services including individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. We also work with families and couples. Treatment is provided within our specialized treatment programs that best suit the patients needs. ICP is dedicated to providing advanced and specialized post-graduate clinical training and high quality therapy at low to moderate cost, in a welcoming, inclusive and accessible environment.

When working with an individual, as therapists we are tracking three things: what's happening with the client, with ourselves, and between the two of us 👩‍👦‍👦

Add a partner or family member to the mix, and the tasks instantaneously expand: we are tracking the same three things, but now with each individual in the room--and while we are also monitoring what is happening between each of them 💫

That is why Family and Couples Treatment Services (FACTS) training matters: building skills to hold that complexity, to stay grounded, and to be a container when emotions run high.

👉 For Clinicians Ready to Go Beyond Individual Treatment.

Depth over exposure.

Many training programs offer brief workshops or modular certificates. FACTS offers something different: a longitudinal, cohort-based experience that gives clinicians time to actually integrate what they are learning into ongoing clinical work.

ICP’s Family and Couples Treatment Services (FACTS) Program offers post-graduate training for clinicians seeking specialized skills in working with couples and families.

Supervision, case consultation, and peer learning aren't add-ons: they are built into the structure.

A foundation that strengthens specialization.

Research shows that demand for specialized therapists is outpacing the field, growing 15% faster than generalist roles, with clinicians in focused areas seeing up to 20% better placement outcomes.

Clinicians who primarily see individuals still benefit from understanding relational dynamics.

Join us for an upcoming virtual Information Session to learn more about the program -

Upcoming Sessions (All Virtual):
• Sat, April 11 | 11am–12pm ET
• Thurs, April 30 | 6–7pm ET
• Sun, May 3 | 12–1pm ET

The two-year FACTS program begins in September and is open to clinicians who will have a graduate degree in a licensable mental health profession by Fall 2026. Our E. Kitch Childs Equity scholarship provides full tuition support ✨ ICP also offers financial assistance and payment plans.

Registration is Now Open: Uncanny Communication: When Unspoken Minds Touch

Please join the Society for the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy (SICP) for an In-Person Lecture on Friday, May 1st from 7pm-9pm at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy.

"What happens when the psychic boundary presumed to separate analyst and patient is breached by telepathic transmission? Drawing on clinical material, de Peyer proposes a shift from assumptions of psychic separation to non-sensory, field-based communication that challenges prevailing analytic epistemologies. Through two contrasting cases of unbidden telepathic transmission, she explores both the dilemmas and generative potential of uncanny phenomena—such as telepathic dreams—situating them within a relational, two-person field. She suggests that moments of uncanny attunement, when met with openness and tolerance of uncertainty, can serve as portals to previously unavailable clinical material."

🍷Refreshments will be served.
🗣 Conversation at 9 pm following the lecture.

Stop the "Tug-of-War" in Eating Disorder Recovery. 🤝

Does working with people with eating disorders feel like a tug of war? Does progress stall when the client returns to their home environment. To sustain recovery, we must move beyond the individual and address the relational biology of the family.
Join Maria Gambino, LMHC for an interactive workshop exploring how to transform the family unit from a source of activation into a primary source of medicine.

Learning Objectives:
Identify specific family-based nervous system signatures that lock symptoms in place.
Analyze the "regulation gap" and its effect on neurobiological safety.
Apply conscious parenting strategies that facilitate developmental repair.

Who We Are

Founded in 1971, The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP) is one of the oldest and largest not-for-profit mental health training and treatment facilities in New York City.

The Institute is composed of a group of over 200 therapists. Most of our therapists have training in psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy through one of ICP’s training programs or an equivalent – some are currently in such training. Many of our therapists have completed their graduate degrees and are licensed while others are earning those degrees or are completing licensing requirements. With the exception of a small number of senior therapists, all clinical work is performed under the supervision of a licensed and experienced professional supervisor.

ICP offers a full range of psychotherapeutic services, including individual and group psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis in addition to more specialized treatment services. ICP is dedicated to providing high quality therapy at low to moderate cost, offering post-graduate training for therapists, and educating the public about mental health issues.
