“Many mothers would lose their lives without this project” Tabu Simba Omary, a mother who used m-mama for her emergency delivery, reflects on her experience:

“I was in severe pain, after which I went to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, they were not able to serve me, and I was referred to Shinyanga Regional Referral Hospital (SRRH). Luckily, a car for this project came to pick me up and took me to SRRH at no cost. When I arrived, I underwent surgery. I and my son are alive [because of m-mama].”

Since m-mama launched in 2013, it has connected over 13,500 pregnant women and newborns in Tanzania and Lesotho to emergency care! Now, thanks to the support of Amazon Web Services (AWS), we can scale m-mama to ensure thousands more women give birth safely.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our sustainability improvement project at Sengerema hospital!

Our goal is to work with our long-time partners at the faith-based hospital to support them on their journey towards becoming more self-sufficient and economically sustainable. We will support the team in making operational improvements, while exploring the use of digital tools to broaden healthcare access for underserved communities.

This project will lay the foundation for a scalable approach to enabling private and faith-based sector growth across Sub-Saharan Africa.

It’s official! We recently celebrated the impact of m-mama in Shinyanga, Tanzania with healthcare workers, drivers, mothers, and our partners.

Our most valued community driver accepted an award for his outstanding service to mothers and babies. We also had a pivotal moment when Touch and our invaluable program partner, Pathfinder International, “handed over the keys” of the m-mama program to the Government of Tanzania.
