Hormonal Imbalance can show up many ways — headaches, cramps, night sweats, hot flashes, low libido, acne, mood swings including depression, anxiety, and irritability, etc.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have a sophisticated and effective way to balance hormones and give you relief from symptoms.
I can’t believe how many people report so many of these symptoms but think they just have to live with them. Not true.
Book an appointment through the link in my bio if you need help with hormonal imbalance 🩷

Our Emotional Reservoirs

Blood, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, has much broader meaning in Chinese medicine than the notion of the physical substance moving through our veins. Blood carries the emotions. When we encounter something, especially of an emotional nature, that our bodies find overwhelming and perhaps can’t deal with initially, we create a reservoir to hold that. These are called Luo vessels. It’s our bodies mechanism to keep us safe, hold things in a place where it won’t cause further injury, or move deeper into the body.
In the first photo you can see tiny little varicosities above the heel, in the second photo a darker vein on the spleen channel. These are both examples of the body holding pathology.
The source of these may or may not be known, often not. But, as we bring consciousness to these things, moving blood with acupuncture, herbs, essential oils, and other practices…even effective talk therapy, it is possible for these reservoirs to clear, lightening our load and giving space and movement to things that have been quite stagnant and taxing us.
Just another amazing example of the seamless body/mind/spirit connection inherent in Chinese medicine.

Happy Halloween! 🎃💀👻

This is my favorite holiday because it’s an opportunity to explore alter egos, get in touch with the supernatural, and just overall access magic. I hope your day is spooky! 💫🧙🏻‍♀️💫

Texas Has A Metal Imbalance

In 5 Element Theory the Metal element correlates with the Autumn, so it’s not unusual to see more imbalance in this element as we move into this season. The Metal element in balance looks like structure, orderliness, refinement, and integrity. It allows us to cut through the unnecessary, superfluous stuff to reveal the most valuable parts. So, Metal is discerning, and brings clarity. Think of a diamond —it’s hardness and splendor. The white color associated with Metal suggests purity and the immaterial, that which is truly of value.
Buuuut, all things can move into excess or deficiency. When the Metal element is in excess it looks like rigidity, control, and self-righteousness. Integrity gets lost in black and white notions of right and wrong— the essence, the many facets of the diamond, are blunted and it loses its splendor. White contains all colors… there’s inherent complexity and deep beauty in it. The Metal element in excess just sees it as flat, simplistic.

If Texas came into my clinic I would think about the Ko (or control) cycle as the key to healing. Fire controls Metal. The love, the heart, the passion. That which connects (rather than divides)- how do we strengthen that. How do we apply Fire to make the Metal workable. 🔥🙏🏻

What do jaw, neck, hip, and ankle tension have to do with each other?
These symptoms don’t stand alone and often as we release one, there’s a chain reaction of release. The channels of acupuncture reveal the intelligence of fascial and energetic planes in the body (see 2nd photo) which can unlock pain and holding patterns elegantly and efficiently.
An exercise I like to do when I’m having pain is to visualize the muscles, bone and fascia of that area softening, then follow where more softening wants to go. In this practice I often discover that releasing a different area than I originally thought was the most painful brings greater relief. For example, a tense shoulder releases fully after I’ve allowed my hip to soften and open. If you have experiences of this sort, releasing pain through visualization or another sense, I’d love to hear about it. They’re interesting journeys.

The Transition From Spring to Summer
How’s spring going for you? We are now moving from the beginning stages of yang into the full expression of yang, which is summer. Some of spring’s common ailments like allergies and tendon injuries might be holding you up a bit, not allowing you to move fully into the next phase.
I explore this topic in my latest article. Check it out 👀

P u l s e

The pulse, in Chinese medicine, provides a wealth of information about what is happening in the individual.

In this patient, the Cun, or most distal positions, were showing irregularity in rhythm, as were the Guan (middle positions), though to a lesser degree. So I allowed this pulse finding to dictate my treatment choice: when irregularity is found in this very general, yet clear way, then the prescription is to regulate the pulse using the back Shu or collecting points.
In the first photo you can see redness around the needles, especially on the upper portion of the body, or those points that correlate with the Cun pulse positions. This redness often indicates disharmony in the corresponding organ.

After 15 minutes I checked in to see the progress and the redness had subsided (see second photo) and, most importantly, the pulse had regulated, indicating that the patient- body/mind/spirit -had come into a place of harmony. ✨✔️✨

W o r k s h o p T e a s e r

On Saturday, Nov 14th in my workshop on essential oils for immune support we will talk about the three levels of qi: Wei, Ying, & Yuan and how they correlate with top, middle, and base notes of essential oils. Then I’ll talk practical ways this info can be applied to maintaining your immune health as well as treating colds and flus. You’ll leave with a better understanding of Chinese Medicine and essential oils, as well as the ability to make an essential oil blend on your own. 🌱🧪

You can RSVP for the event

S q u i r r e l W i s d o m

I’ve been watching the squirrels and they have been BUSY. They’re hustling around gathering nuts as big as their heads and stowing them out of sight. They know the weather is changing and no matter what else is going on, they have to get prepared.

As always, nature is our best guide. We, too, have to get prepared for what lies ahead. Luckily we aren’t subject to the elements in quite the way squirrels are, but the shifts in weather and the earth’s energetics have profound affects on us too.

I’m taking the squirrels’ cue to start adding bone broth back into my diet as well as medicinal mushrooms like reishi and chaga. Building immunity with fortifying foods and having a regular breathing and movement routine is key right now.
