The Center for Motivation and Change (CMC) is a unique, private group practice of dedicated clinicians and researchers in New York City specializing in the treatment of substance use and compulsive behaviors. We are driven by an optimism about people's capacity to change and a commitment to the science of change. The cornerstone of our treatment approach is motivational, helping each client find a path toward change they can truly embrace. Through the use of respectful, flexible, evidence-based approaches, we address issues ranging from problematic use to dependence and work to help each individual clear the often difficult obstacles to effective, life-enhancing, and long-lasting change.

Your mindset toward learning can shape your success. 👇

When you’re trying something new, if you expect perfection, quick results, or doubt your ability to grow, frustration and avoidance can easily take over. But when you approach challenges with patience, curiosity, and compassion, you open the door to growth and lasting change.

If you are considering making a change in a behavior, be prepared for some part of you to resist. Our minds crave predictability; it’s how they try to “protect” us, even when that keeps us stuck.

When we change, we step into the unknown, and it’s perfectly normal to resist that space.

Give yourself room to practice, to stumble, and to refine your skills. With time and consistency, you’ll strengthen the new behaviors you want and experience the growth you’ve been working toward.

A day where science meets compassion and community leads the way. 🌿

The Tree of Addiction Conference 2025 brings together clinicians, educators, law enforcement, and community advocates for a shared purpose: healing, learning, and transformation.

We’re deeply honored that Carrie Wilkens, PhD, CMC Co-Founder, will deliver this year’s keynote address: “The Power of Compassionate Communication: Recognizing the Family’s Role in Driving Change.”

Her message reminds us that compassion isn’t a soft skill, it’s a catalyst for recovery and real change. 💙

Self-preservation is one of the brain’s most natural functions.

When something feels threatening, even emotionally, our nervous system moves fast to protect us: it pulls back, numbs out, argues, or avoids. These reactions aren’t random; they’re adaptive responses designed to keep us safe.

What once protected us can later hold us back. Avoiding conflict might reduce anxiety, but it also blocks connection. Shutting down or using substances might quiet stress, but it also prevents growth.

All behaviors have a function. By identifying what a behavior is attempting to manage or communicate, we can develop new strategies that meet our needs in a healthier, more productive way.

Motivation is not an all-or-nothing thing.

“All-or-nothing” thinking tells us we need to feel fully ready or perfectly inspired before taking action. But real change doesn’t work that way.

Motivation often follows action.

When you take action, your brain experiences a sense of progress and reward, which fuels the motivation to keep going.

Don’t wait for the feeling, create it!

At CMC, we believe in the power of these treatments and kindness to create real and lasting change.

Evidence-based treatments (EBTs) are therapies that have been thoroughly researched and proven effective in real-world settings. Unlike therapies based on theory alone, EBTs are backed by science and have clear guidelines that help with outcomes.

At CMC, we believe in the power of these treatments and kindness to create real and lasting change. That’s why we use approaches like:

👉 Motivational Interviewing (MI)
👉 Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
👉 Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT)
👉 Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

For trauma and PTSD, we offer specialized therapies like Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), all grounded in evidence.

Most importantly, we engage families in recovery with CRAFT and the Invitation to Change Approach (ITC).
