Guess what? I fell in LOVE 💜

This last year I began working in EI after 8 years as a school-based SLP. Was I nervous? Yes. Was there a lot to learn? Yes. Am I still learning? Yes. Will I ALWAYS be learning? Absolutely.

But I adore working with little ones and their families! Here’s a round up of my “go to” resources that have been incredibly helpful this last year and will continue to be staples in my toolbox.

🍋No speech theme is complete without a book right?! I LOVE this Pinkalicious book. Pinkalicious needs a way to earn $ for the gumball machine, so she sets up a lemonade stand with her brother. Of course she wants the lemonade to be PINK, but her method of achieving pink lemonade leaves her customers a bit unsatisfied 🙃

🍋This story has quite a few problems embedded into the plot. I love the opportunities for inferencing and reasoning as Pinkalicious tries to make her lemonade stand a success!

🍋Do you have this book in your collection?!

🍋For my little ones, I love using this interactive Elmo & Grover’s Lemonade Stand activity on the Smartboard from

🍋This game involves CLICKING ONLY - no dragging! Students click on the lemons and the sugar for them to be added into the pitcher. Then they click on the spoon to stir! 🥣

🍋Next, Grover and Elmo sell their lemonade at the community market. Students click the pitcher to count a cup for each customer. Grover gives feedback if the number of cups doesn’t match up. The kids love the animation and sound effects in this activity!

🍋Have you ever used this game or any others from the Sesame Street website?

🍋Have you seen this game?! This was a find that I’m obsessed with! It is so perfect for lemonade themed sessions! It’s under $15 on Amazon, so SAVE this post for your BTS wish list!

🍋It comes with 4 lemonade stands with slots for coins, a serving tray and 10 lemonade cups. Students draw cards that have lemonade orders and have to complete the order on the tray to earn the coins! Whoever earns the most coins wins! It is meant to be played as a memory game where you look quickly at the card and have to recall. But you can adapt it and have students use the cards to follow along as they complete the order or provide auditory directives and then have the students check the order cards to see if they filled the order correctly. I’ve also had students play cooperatively to fill the orders together - one is in charge of pink lemonade and one is in charge of yellow lemonade!

🍋There are special cards like “spilled lemonade” where you return a coin to the pile, a “tip” card where you get to take a coin and a “rainout” where you lose a turn because you can’t have a lemonade stand when it’s raining, right?!

🍋Communication targets:
• Turn-taking
• Producing “I need” phrases (“I need 2 yellow lemonades and 1 pink lemonade”)
• Giving peers directives (“Get 2 pink cups”)
• Following visual/auditory directives
• Commenting: “Yay!” “Oh no rain!” “Oops I spilled!” “You did it!”
• Pretend play
• Simple numeracy/colors

🍋I’ll show you a closer look at the game in my stories later! Would your students love this as much as mine?!How else would you adapt it?

🍋Truth: I usually do a Lemonade MONTH in June at my school! It is such a fun multi-sensory way to work on communication...and delicious!

🍋I’m going to be sharing my FAVORITE lemonade activities that are perfect for the end of the school year or ESY this week on IG! SAVE these posts for this year or next!

🍋Here’s a peak at my Cooking in Speech: Lemonade resource. It includes differentiated visual recipes for fresh lemonade and 6 extension activities. AND I just added Boom Cards to it this week, so re-download if you already own it! Link: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Cooking-in-Speech-Lemonade-Now-with-Boom-Cards-2493495

🍋Today let’s focus on the “cooking!” I usually repeat the lemonade prep as a push in activity each week. With a small group/self-contained class you can target:
• Requesting
• Commenting
• Turn-taking
• Following directions
• Problem solving
• Sequencing
• Recall

🍋The best part? Towards the end of school we set up a lemonade “stand” and have students/staff come by for lemonade. So FUNctional for students with conversation and vocational goals! More on that later this week 😊

🍋Have you tried making lemonade with your students?

Last week I posted in my stories about how one of my EI kiddos has benefitted greatly from a large tub. So many of you had amazing questions and comments, so I wanted to share a bit more about how we’ve been using it! SAVE if you need some ideas for incorporating a tub into your sessions for early communicators.

The OT recommended this tub (18 gallons) to the parents and it has done wonders for his joint attention and engagement during our speech sessions! He is initiating going into the tub himself with some of his favorite toys. Once inside, we are seeing much more joint attention, initiation, and sustained engagement!

Swipe ➡️to see some social games we play using the tub.

💡WHY is this tub so organizing? I’m NOT an OT, so I discussed with a close friend who IS to get some insight into the wondrous effects I’m seeing.

💡She explained that the tub:

*️⃣ Provides a designated, purposeful place for a child to build awareness of task expectations and have a sense of control
*️⃣ Eliminates sensory stimuli that may impede sustained attention (especially visual)
*️⃣ Gives a higher level of vestibular and propriocetive input that provides a “just right” level of alertness for a child that may be hyposensitive to vestibular and proprioceptive input. This impacts body awareness, motor planning, and attention.
*️⃣ Is helpful with postural support (if a child is leaning against back and that’s interfering with attention)

How have you used tubs, laundry baskets, etc. with EI kiddos/preschoolers?
