More information about tomorrow night's event:

A Monthly experiential and discussion series that I have been developing, called The Limen is having this month's event tomorrow night in my office in Union Square. It is meant to be a small gathering between two and eight people, depending on the level of interest and availability of those who can make it. It tends to attract therapists and clinicians, but is open to anyone who is seeking to expand consciousness and a deeper sense of self and other. So it has a relational bent.

The topic tomorrow is 'Do You Know What I'm Feeling? The Role of Facial and Vocal Cues.' We will be experimenting with sensory input and how capacity for empathy and receptivity depends upon the way in which we take in information.

New research shows that listening without visual input, rather than a combination or purely visual offers the most emotional recognition. This outcome suggests that there is an economy of mental and emotional availability with too much information coming from visual and auditory cues so that we zone in and out of following and relating to the person with whom we are attempting to connect.

This idea seems strangely familiar when I think about the level of my listening skills with patients. That being said, there is a richness to the visual/nonverbal communication that I hope would not be lost on this finding.

This will, by no means be a replication of the study, but we will test out for ourselves how to be the most present and receptive to one another in the group. As such, we will be sharing aspects of our real life to see if we can have an experience of deeper interpersonal engagement through experiential exercises that will range from verbal to visual through the traditional forms of speech but also art making and bodily movement. If you can't make it but would like to try to make future events, go to the bottom of www.mariannehughes.com/the-limen/ to sign up for the once to twice a month newsletter. Thanks for considering joining me in this exciting endeavor where professional meets personal, and the external world meets the internal world.
