Did you know that you can have a doula for not only labor but also for the postpartum phase of childbirth? They are known as Postpartum Doulas! For our Woman Crush Wednesday, we asked postpartum doula Julia Thibaud to explain a little bit about what a postpartum doula does and how they can be beneficial during the postpartum period.

This is what she had to say:

“Congratulations – you’re pregnant! Now the fun begins: where am I going to give birth? Who will I choose for a provider? Can I really not eat sushi during pregnancy? With so much emphasis placed on pregnancy and birth, the time after your baby arrives can feel like an afterthought.

The period we refer to as “postpartum” (sometimes also called the fourth trimester) can bring some of the highest highs of parenting: meeting your baby, hearing their coos, seeing them smile for the first time. And! There can also be dizzying challenges: adjusting to a suddenly altered sleep schedule, understanding how and when to feed your baby, figuring out when to feed yourself, filing paperwork and scheduling appointments. It’s no wonder parents get overwhelmed!

Enter the postpartum doula. A postpartum doula can help with so many aspects of the transition to parenthood: physical recovery after birth (emotional, too), nursing or bottle feeding your baby, keeping your water bottle filled and your fridge stocked, paying special attention to an older sibling who’s adjusting as well, and when something falls outside of scope, they can refer you to a trusted specialist, from pelvic floor physical therapists to lactation counselors and beyond.

The support and care that a postpartum doula can offer will serve your family not just in the days, weeks, and months postpartum, but for years and years to come.”

Living with a chronic illness can be challenging, but there's one secret that can make a world of difference – keeping things tidy and decluttering your space.

Here's why tidiness can assist a spoonie:

✅Simplify Your Space: When your energy is limited, a tidy environment can work wonders! By decluttering and organizing, you create a space that is calming and supportive. It reduces visual overwhelm and allows you to navigate your surroundings with ease. Simplify, and let tranquility find its way in!

✅Enhance Mental Clarity: A clutter-free space means a clutter-free mind! Cleaning up not only helps clear physical messes but also promotes mental clarity. It reduces distractions, helps you focus, and creates a serene environment for self-care and relaxation. Let your mind breathe and find the calm within!

✅Boost Emotional Well-being: Tidying up can be therapeutic for the soul. The act of cleaning and organizing can provide a sense of accomplishment, control, and peace. It's a tangible reminder that you have the power to create order and harmony amidst life's challenges. Let tidying become a form of self-care and emotional rejuvenation!

Remember, it's not about perfection, but rather creating an environment that supports your well-being as a Spoonie.

06/05/2023

Interstitial cystitis (IC), sometimes called painful bladder syndrome (PBS), is a chronic bladder condition that results in recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder or pelvic area.

It’s not unusual for people who have IC/PBS to urinate as often as 50 times in a single day — almost 7 times the normal frequency.

This frequency and urgency to urinate happens not only during the day but also at night during sleep (known as nocturia).

And because of IC’s similarities to UTI, the two are often confused, despite the latter being a milder condition.
Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis include:

👉Urinary frequency
👉Dysuria - a burning sensation when p*eing.
👉Urinary urgency
👉Suprap***c pain - pain in the area of the stomach and above the p***c bone.
👉Nocturia - getting up in the night frequently to urinate.
👉Dyspareunia - painful s*x
👉Incomplete voiding - difficulty emptying bladder

Currently, there is no known cure for IC/PBS, but there are treatment options that can help alleviate the symptoms. These are:

✅Retraining the bladder: Holding p*e in for longer stretches of time.
✅Loose clothing: This helps to relieve pressure on the bladder.
✅Diet: Eating fewer citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeinated drinks, carbonated drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, and artificial sweeteners can help.
✅Quit smoking - Smoking can lead to damage of the lining of the urinary tract, which can worsen IC/PBS.
✅Pelvic floor physical therapy treatments are specialized exercises which strengthen and stretch the muscles on the pelvic floor that support the uterus, re**um, bowel, and bladder. Pelvic floor physical therapy may help some of the symptoms of IC.

Get your running shoes out because today is world running day!

Here are some fantastic reasons why running is absolutely incredible for your health:

1️⃣ Cardiovascular Fitness: Running gets your heart pumping, improving your cardiovascular health. Regular running helps strengthen your heart, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart disease. It's like giving your heart a daily workout!

2️⃣ Mental Well-being: Running is a natural mood booster! 🌞 When you hit the pavement, your brain releases endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that reduce stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of depression. Plus, it enhances cognitive function, improving focus and memory. Running is the ultimate stress-buster!

3️⃣ Bone Health: Strong bones are the foundation of a healthy body, and running can help you achieve that! It's a weight-bearing exercise that stimulates bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Take care of your skeletal system while enjoying the freedom of running!

4️⃣ Immune Boost: Running can bolster your immune system, making you less susceptible to illness. Regular exercise like running strengthens your body's defense mechanism and helps fight off infections and diseases. Stay fit and keep those germs at bay!

5️⃣ Social Connection: Running doesn't just benefit your physical health; it also provides an opportunity to connect with others. Joining running clubs, participating in races, or even having a running buddy can foster a sense of community and support. Get inspired, motivate others, and build lasting friendships!

So lace up those running shoes, step out into the world, and embrace the incredible benefits of running!

Remember, it's not just about the destination; it's the journey that transforms you. Let's run towards a healthier, happier life together!
