Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy: Therapy & Training

Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy: Therapy & Training Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy is committed to the teaching and practice of Gestalt Therapy, through our training programs and low-fee clinic.

Our theory is one of inclusion and connection; we celebrate each person's uniqueness and full emergence. "GAP" is a post-graduate psychotherapy institute committed to the teaching, practice, and continued development of Gestalt Therapy. Our practice has been enriched and deepened by the integration of such modern and ancient disciplines as communications and family systems theory, contemporary existentialism, inter-subjectivity theory, self psychology, and Zen Buddhism. This allows for a creative and flexible approach, which enhances the development of each therapist's creativity and unique personal style. We offer low-fee individual, group and couples therapy in our clinic. Our 4-year program consists of a combination of lecture, Demonstration, and Practicum work. Our extensive faculty is devoted to teaching the fundamentals of Gestalt therapy theory with an emphasis on hands-on experiential learning. Our New York State Gestalt Psychoanalytic Program leads to a License in Psychoanlysis (LP). Eligible participants complete our Clinical Fellowship program plus a set of State required courses in psychoanalysis and become qualified to sit for the NYS Psychoanalyst Licensing exam. Candidates with a Master's Degree in any field may apply. Our core curriculum includes: Foundational Gestalt Theory, Character Styles, Working with the Body, Gestalt Group Therapy, Dreamwork, and Developing an Embodied Practice. Training candidates treat clients in our low-fee clinic and develop the beginning of a private practice while training with us and attending weekly supervision with a faculty member. Upon graduation, trainees may take their clinic clients into their private practice. Classes take place on 20 Friday evenings from 6-9pm from October to May, and include a few additional weekend seminars and workshops through the year. Our 1-year Practioner program offers participants an introduction to Gestalt Therapy theory and practice and provides the opportunity to explore the application of Gestalt principles to allied fields. The program meets every other Friday evening from 6-9pm from October through May. For more information, visit our webiste at gestaltassociates.org

Dear Community,

We write to you now both with heavy hearts and some hope for our future, as we reflect on the long history of systemic racism in our country, and yet admire and applaud the protests happening now, in the wake of the latest round of murders of people of color. We grieve with you these recent losses, as well as so many in our past.

Gestalt Theory is a theory of inclusion and connection, which celebrates the meeting of each person with another, and honors the place “between.” Our goal is to meet each person as they are, and to fully embrace their uniqueness. We seek to meet each other as equals and not from a position of hierarchy; from a position of openness and curiosity, and not from a position of either preconceived or ignored difference.

From the vantage point of our theory, we reject the deeply embedded marginalization and dehumanization of our fellow human beings, and their deprivation of the basic human rights that many of us can take for granted. We are horrified at the recurrent murders of people of color in America, for which no one is held culpable. We are committed to developing a heightened awareness of personal and institutional racism in our teaching, in our work, and in the larger community.

In this spirit we are currently matching a portion of all donations generated from our community, and encourage you to email us if you have contributed to any efforts to support inclusion and social justice, such as Black Lives Matter, The George Floyd Memorial Fund, The Bail Project, Equal Citizens, the ACLU, or Campaign Zero.

We send our heartfelt sympathy to the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Yvette Smith, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Treyvan Martin, Miriam Carey, Tarika Wilson, Kimani Gray, Sean Bell, Amidu Diallo and so many others, who have unjustly and violently lost their loved ones.

In closing, we share this quote by Audre Lorde: "It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences."

With Love and Best Wishes,
Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy Faculty
