Did you know the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was first signed into law in 1990?
Now, 35 years on, its goals are to provide a vital framework for ethical, inclusive healthcare for folks with visible and invisible disabilities. While there have been recent changes to some of the requirements to this federal law, the main mission of the ADA has remained intact.
As a Certified S*x Therapist & Supervisor and Founder of Center for Love and S*x, I go a step further. CLS Certified S*x therapists are trained to ask detailed questions on the kind of s*xual life their clients are having and the kind of life they desire including specificities around positions, maneovering from one position to another, needing physical supports like a wedge, a specialized chair, an extension accessory for a s*x toy, etc. We provide exercises to folks who have difficulty reading social cues in order to increase clients’ skill in flirtation, banter, asking for a date, and talking about consent at each step of a s*xual encounter. S*x therapy centers not just on treating mood disorders and relational couples’ communication skills but on offering accurate, science-backed s*xual education and supportive treatment based on our clients’ lived experiences and their stated desired s*xual goals.
To me, true equality in s*x therapy is about expanding opportunities for education, exploration, and pleasure. It’s about recognising and addressing the unique barriers many disabled people face when expressing their s*xuality - from addressing ableist attitudes and assumptions in the medical and therapeutic fields, to overcoming societal barriers and accessing s*xual health resources. And it’s about supporting people with disabilities to address these challenges so that they can enjoy better, more fulfilling s*x lives.
Because access is just the beginning, and experience is the end goal.
