Integrative Healing Arts Acupuncture, P.C. IHA offers holistic acupuncture & Chinese medicine in NYC for pain, fertility, and women’s health. Its ancient roots can be traced to China.

Acupuncture is a powerful form of healing and part of a system of healthcare practices dating back more than 5000 years. The foundation of this form of medicine is based on the ancient Taoist principles of Yin and Yang, the transformation of energies within the body as well as external environment to achieve balance. Acupuncture uses the application of needles to stimulate various points on meridians on the body that facilitate the movement of Qi also known as “life force”. Stimulating these points helps bring the body into balance by activating and supporting the immune system thereby increasing the body’s ability to heal itself. This is also known as homeostasis.

The same symptom, different treatment.

On the surface one patient may experience period cramping that reflects constrained Liver Qi that is considered an excess pattern. For another, period cramp can reflect blood and Qi deficiency.

When being prescribed herbal formulas the seasoned Chinese medicine practitioner will beyond the symptoms address the root of the pattern.

Treating symptoms is more of a broken and fix model that doesn’t really “fix” the underlying condition that leads to the health imbalance.
Personalization is essential. Learn more about how herbal medicine supports hormonal regulation through pattern differentiation: https://www.integrativehealingarts.com/blog/herbs-for-hormonal-balance

Hormonal imbalance is a pattern.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, PMS and irregular cycles are not viewed as “hormonal events”. We have to be careful to not use Western diagnostic labels that are from a different filter and model of health and healing.
While symptoms may appear the same, the source of imbalance can be vastly different.
They reflect underlying disharmony that develops over time. Two patients may present with similar symptoms such as cramping, mood shifts, or cycle irregularity, yet the internal mechanisms can be entirely different.
Symptoms of Liver Qi stagnation may present with irritability, PMS-breast tenderness, and tension headaches before menstruation. Blood deficiency may show up as fatigue, scanty blood flow, poor concentration, or poor sleep. Kidney imbalance can cause hair loss, PCOS, slow healing or irregular or missed cycles.
The symptoms are considered patterns that when accurately identified will reveal root causes that can then be addressed with therapies such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, as well as food and lifestyle changes.
Herbal medicine is prescribed according to pattern differentiation. Classical formulas are balanced to support regulating circulation, nourish deficiency, clear accumulation, or strengthen constitution and flow of energy depending on what is present. Without accurate assessment, herbs can miss the prescribed.
Hormonal regulation improves when the underlying imbalance is addressed with personalized care.

Why drinking hot or warm water could be the answer to digestive upset.
If you frequently experience bloating, fatigue after meals, loose stools, or a feeling of internal heaviness, the temperature of what you drink may be why.

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes Spleen deficiency as a common pattern underlying sluggish digestion. Cold drink intake can strain your metabolic process delaying nutrient absorption and efficiency.

Often there are easy things we can do to improve our health and wellness.

In Chinese medicine, digestion prefers warmth. The Stomach is the Yang organ and the Spleen is its paired Yin organ. Yang is warm while Yin is cool or neutral. The Stomach Yang breaks down the food, while the Spleen transforms the food to nutrients that are then absorbed to become Blood that transports the building blocks of energy QI (ATP). The Stomach requires adequate Yang energy to transform food and fluids into Qi and Blood.

Warm water supports digestive function and fluid metabolism, particularly in colder seasons when the body is using more energy to stay warm.

Physiology responds to consistency.
I was recently quoted in Bustle on why warm water is a foundational principle in Chinese medicine.

Painful, irregular, or exhausting cycles are not something you simply have to tolerate.

In Chinese medicine, cyclical symptoms point directly to patterns of imbalance involving circulation, nourishment, and nervous system regulation. When these patterns are addressed, the cycle often becomes smoother and more predictable.

The cycle is not the problem, it’s the messenger.

Your menstrual cycle provides real-time feedback about your health.

Changes in energy, mood, sleep, digestion, and pain across the month are not random fluctuations. They reflect each phase of the monthly reproductive cycle and how the body is regulating stress, circulation, and hormonal signaling. This is key for understanding overall health, the fertility window and if there are imbalances that may cause fertility challenges or even chronic illness in the future.

Chinese medicine has used the menstrual cycle diagnostically for centuries, identifying patterns long before symptoms become a chronic condition. When the cycle is understood, this can make all the difference in energy, emotion and stress levels as well as supporting fertility.

Listening to these signals allows for earlier, gentler support.

Cravings are communication, not weakness.

Both modern research and Chinese medicine recognize that PMS cravings reflect real physiological needs. Mineral depletion, anemia, stress on the nervous system, and poor circulation all contribute to premenstrual discomfort.

Ignoring or suppressing these signals doesn’t create balance or make them go away. Understanding why they occur and supporting your body does. A whole health approach to improve blood flow, mineral and nutritional support and nervous system regulation. The insatiable cravings subside.

Relief comes from addressing the root pattern, not from restriction.

Chocolate cravings before your period are not a lack of willpower, they are physiological signals.
From a scientific perspective, these cravings are often linked to magnesium depletion and changes in serotonin that occur during the luteal phase. Magnesium supports muscle relaxation, nervous system regulation, and pain control, all of which are under strain during PMS.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, PMS is often associated with Liver Qi and blood stagnation and inadequate nourishment. When nourishment is insufficient circulation is restricted, discomfort and cramping increases and cravings appear as the body’s attempt to restore balance. The uterus is a muscle and needs sufficient blood and nourishment.

Instead of fighting cravings, integrative care asks a more useful question: What is the body asking for? When addressing the underlying imbalance, cravings often soften naturally.

If winter feels heavier than it should, it may not be about mindset.

Your nervous system is constantly responding to its surroundings including light, space, noise, visual input, and physical flow. Over time, environments that feel cluttered, dim, or stagnant can challenge emotional balance and energy levels, even when everything seems “fine” on the surface.

Feng Shui is a grounded, intelligent tool for addressing winter blues without adding more tasks to your life. Studies show that home and work environments play an important role in emotional wellbeing as well productivity and happiness. By improving natural light functionality and reducing clutter that can be the source of visual overload, the nervous system receives fewer stress signals throughout the day.

This is not about perfect spaces. It’s about supportive ones.

Seasonal feelings of low mood are often framed as a problem with motivation or a mental health issue, but from an integrative and Chinese medicine perspective, we have to look at how the environment influences health and wellness.

During winter, we experience reduced daylight, more time indoors, heavier routines, and fewer natural breaks in the day. These changes affect how the nervous system regulates stress, immune function and our emotions can also go darker. When light, clean air, and movement are limited, the body is stressed to maintain balance.

Feng Shui is not about interior aesthetics or wild superstition. It is a practical system known as the art and science of placement, designed to support Qi or life force. This is understanding the role that light, space, and energy play in health and wellness and how it influences how the nervous system responds to the environment. Small changes in lighting, layout, and visual flow can significantly reduce the background stress your body carries each day.

When the environment supports the flow of Qi, emotional regulation follows naturally. Not because you “try harder,” but because your system no longer has to compensate.
