Dr. Larisa Likver is a board-certified physiatrist who has over 20 years of medical experience, specifically pain management, both in New York City and internationally. She has been trained in Prolotherapy by the Hackett-Hemwall Foundation, the leading institution for Prolotherapy education and research, named after the two pioneers who invented and developed this technique in the United States. For over 35 years, the Hackett-Hemwall foundation has hosted a medical missionary trip to Honduras. Dr. Larisa Likver has advanced her expertise in Prolotherapy by participating in this missions in 2014 and 2015, dedicating her time and service to treat people who are otherwise unable to afford medical care. This treatment was created by the New Zealand physician Dr. John Lyftgoft. Dr. Likver attended some of the few global conferences in Neural Prolotherapy to obtain training from Dr. Lyftogt himself. In 2013, Dr. Likver participated in the most comprehensive global conference for Neural Prolotherapy held in Guadelajara, Mexico. Dr. Likver is recognized as a Pioneer by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Certification in Musculoskeletal Sonography was first introduced to medical professionals in 2012. Dr. Likver successfully passed this new exam and was among the first to be awarded a Pioneer Certificate. She has nearly 10 years of experience using ultrasound guidance to dramatically improve the outcome of pain-alleviating procedures (Platelets-Rich Plasma or PRP treatment, Prolotherapy, joint visco-supplementation, etc.) through direct and targeted injections. By visualizing the pain-affected area in real-time, Dr. Likver delivers medication precisely where it needs to go.

Joint pain frequently results from ligament laxity or instability rather than cartilage damage alone. When ligaments lose strength, joints can experience hypermobility, leading to repetitive irritation and recurring pain episodes.

Prolotherapy strengthens ligaments by stimulating controlled healing and collagen production. Over time, this increases joint stability and reduces the likelihood of repeated injuries. The goal of prolotherapy is not temporary symptom relief but long-term structural improvement that helps prevent pain from returning.

Successful pain management requires more than temporary symptom relief. Chronic pain is often multifactorial, involving joints, fascia, nerves, posture, circulation, and nervous system regulation. Treating only one aspect of pain rarely produces lasting results.

A comprehensive evaluation allows treatment to be tailored to each individual. By identifying root causes and creating an individualized plan that may include regenerative injections, rehabilitation, and lifestyle adjustments, patients can achieve more sustainable improvement. Long-term healing happens when the whole system is supported, not just the painful area.

The first day of spring is a natural reminder to move more and reconnect with outdoor activity. Walking outdoors improves circulation, lubricates joints, and gently stimulates muscles and fascia that may have become stiff during winter months.

Nature exposure also reduces stress and improves nervous system regulation, which plays an important role in chronic pain management. Even short daily walks can improve mobility, decrease stiffness, and support healthier joints. Consistent low-impact movement often produces better long-term results than intermittent intense exercise.

Fascia is the connective tissue network that surrounds muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs. It allows structures to glide smoothly and efficiently during movement. When fascia becomes restricted due to injury, inflammation, surgery, or inactivity, it can create stiffness, compress nerves, and alter posture.

Fascial dysfunction is often overlooked because it does not always appear on standard imaging studies. Treating fascia through movement, hydration, regenerative therapies, and ultrasound-guided interventions can relieve pain patterns that otherwise remain unexplained.

Dr. Likver can help you understand this treatment and whether it may be beneficial to your needs and goals. Get started today with a consultation at https://www.drlikver.com

March is National Nutrition Month, an important reminder that what we eat directly affects inflammation, tissue repair, and pain perception. Chronic inflammation contributes to joint degeneration, nerve irritation, and delayed healing, while nutrient-dense foods support collagen formation, muscle recovery, and healthy circulation.

An anti-inflammatory diet rich in leafy greens, berries, omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, and lean proteins can help reduce pain and support long-term joint health. Nutrition alone may not solve chronic pain, but it creates the biological foundation that allows treatments such as prolotherapy, PRP, and rehabilitation to be more effective.

Let this month encourage you to put nutrition first, and if pain or limited functionality require more intervention, connect with Dr. Likver: https://www.drlikver.com

National Women’s History Month is an opportunity to recognize the many women who have shaped modern medicine, including the fields of pain management and physiatry. Specialists such as Dr. Janet Travell, a pioneer in myofascial pain and trigger point therapy, made significant contributions to our understanding of musculoskeletal pain and functional medicine.

Women in medicine continue to expand research and innovation in regenerative therapies, rehabilitation, and patient-centered care. Their work has helped shift pain management away from symptom suppression toward restoring function, mobility, and quality of life, and Dr. Likver is no exception.

Consult with Dr. Likver at https://www.drlikver.com to explore how she can help you achieve lasting healing from chronic pain.

Daylight Saving Time began yesterday and many people experience temporary disruption in their sleep patterns. Since poor sleep increases cortisol, slows tissue repair, and lowers pain tolerance, even small changes in sleep duration like this can affect pain levels, inflammation, and nervous system sensitivity.

Taking time to adjust gradually to the time change can help minimize these effects. Maintaining consistent sleep schedules, limiting evening screen exposure, and allowing the body to recover are essential strategies for pain management. Restful sleep remains one of the most powerful tools for healing.

For those with mobility struggles looking to improve strength, function, and pain, Dr. Likver often recommends Tai Chi. Tai Chi works through slow, fluid movements that stretch and hydrate fascial layers throughout the body, which play a critical role in circulation, nerve mobility, and movement efficiency. When fascia becomes stiff or dehydrated, it can restrict blood flow and compress nerves, contributing to pain and fatigue.

Tai Chi encourages rhythmic loading and unloading of tissues, improving vascular flow and oxygenation while calming the sympathetic nervous system. This combination makes it particularly beneficial for individuals managing chronic pain, vascular conditions, or nervous system sensitivity.

Ultrasound-guided deep-layer scar dissection is increasingly used to address pain that does not respond to conventional treatment. Scar tissue can tether fascia, restrict movement, and compress small nerves, contributing to widespread pain and stiffness.

By carefully releasing these restrictions under ultrasound guidance, patients often experience improved range of motion, reduced nerve irritation, and greater ease of movement. This approach is particularly helpful for individuals with hypermobility, prior surgeries, or unexplained chronic pain patterns.

To find out if these treatments are right for you, consult with Dr. Likver: https://www.drlikver.com

Approximately 70% of patients Dr. Likver sees fall within the hypermobility spectrum. These individuals often experience loose joints combined with significant muscle tightness. Muscles become overactive as they attempt to stabilize joints with weaker ligament and fascial support.

For hypermobile patients, excessive stretching can actually worsen symptoms. Strengthening and controlled movement are far more beneficial. These patients must also be mindful of cumulative physical stress, as their connective tissue is more vulnerable to overload and injury.

If you struggle with hypermobility and its associated challenges, talk to Dr. Likver today: https://www.drlikver.com

February is American Heart Health Month, and heart health is closely connected to chronic pain, nerve function, and musculoskeletal recovery. Elevated cortisol from chronic stress and ongoing pain increases inflammation, disrupts vascular tone, and places added strain on the cardiovascular system. Over time, this stress response can worsen both pain perception and heart health.

For patients who cannot tolerate high-intensity exercise due to joint instability, chronic pain, or cardiac limitations, movement arts like Tai Chi offer a scientifically supported alternative. Through slow, controlled movements paired with deep breathing, Tai Chi improves circulation, oxygen delivery, and nervous system regulation while gently engaging muscles and connective tissue.
