Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo is a well rounded physician-scientist with an impeccable reputation on a national and international level for his exceptional work in molecular oncology and experimental pathology. He is the Chair of the Department of Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a distinguished professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where he teaches pathology, genetics and genomic sciences, and oncological sciences. Furthermore, Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo was listed in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation among the 400 most highly influential biomedical researchers in the world. He made the list alongside three other researchers of the Icahn School, all of whom have been selected from more than 15 million scientists. Globally recognized as an authority in all aspects of tumor suppression mechanisms, Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo concentrated his research efforts particularly on the multidrug resistance in human cancer and the alteration of tumor suppression genes. According to the Icahn School of Medicine website, “he developed and implemented an oncologic molecular pathology discipline and helped create the systems pathology platform. This approach uses systems biology to form mathematical models of the interaction and behavior of cancer cells with the goal of determining tumor pathogenesis and clinical outcome.” It is known that his cancer research has crucially impacted tumor suppression, mainly for bladder and prostate cancers but also in the case of soft tissue sarcomas. He is now directing his research towards a deeper comprehension of how human cancers work and continues to establish new targets for cancer therapeutics. Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo features a remarkable career marked with extraordinary discoveries and pioneering research journeys. In addition, he has numerous gold medals for medical services in Spain and has developed multiple patents over the course of his career. While he remains a remarkable physician-scientist, Dr. Cordon-Carlos is also an outstanding mentor, highly praised for his dedication and commitment to teaching others. He further maintains prominent posts in several international and national organizations. Dr. Cordon-Cardo has planned a broad vision that almost completely redefines the discipline of pathology, conferring it a position at the core of patient management and individualized medicine. He has a total of 339 papers published from 1996 to 2011, with 27, 297 total citations. Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo embarked on the challenging journey to becoming an eminence in the field of pathology in 1980 in Spain when he received his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Established in 1968, UAB is a public university primarily located in Cerdanyola del Vallès, near the city of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. He discovered his passion for pathology and inspiration to improve cancer diagnosis as a student in Spain as he peered through the microscope at tumor cells. Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo also obtained his PhD in Cell Biology and Genetics from Cornell University Medical College. He attributes his success to a unique combination of good education and the mentorship of terrific educators. In his time away from his busy schedule, Dr. Cordon-Cardo prefers studying, listening to music, and soccer. An advocate of continued education, he conducted his fellowship training in pathology and immunopathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In recognition of his outstanding performance in the field of pathology, Dr. Carlos Cordon-Cardo has been acknowledged among The Leading Physicians of the World, a world-class publication of the International Association of HealthCare Professionals (IAHCP). An authority in pathology, he is also a distinguished member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, American Society for Investigative Pathology, American Association for Cancer Research, International Society of Urological Pathology, Society for Applied Immunohistrochemistry, and Association for Molecular Pathology.
