Join Lara as she leads you through a practice to deepen your connection to your breath. Pranayama, the art of breathing, calms and strengthens the mind and creates a feeling of vast internal space by leading the senses of perception and mind to reach within towards their source. “When the breath is irregular, the mind wavers; when the breath is steady, so is the mind. As long as there is breath within the body, there is life; when the breath departs, life also departs. Therefore, regulate the breath.” – Hathayoga Pradipika
In this workshop we will begin with asanas that teach us to consciously rest, relax and become quiet so that the breath can be revealed and then move into some fundamental reclining and seated pranayama practices.

In Katonah Yoga, the chair becomes a dynamic prop — a tool that supports us in stepping out of our personal investments. It offers a structure through which we can reconcile and reorganize ourselves, awakening insight and availability for returning to the implicit dialogue: to meet oneself, tune into our strengths, and reawaken our blind spots. We use the chair as scaffolding — a frame through which we can flush our organs and glands — so that we function more optimally and inhabit a body that is well-informed to meet life with steadiness, solidity, and resonance.

This month, Lara’s workshop revolves around Yoga Kurunta (Kuranti is Sanskrit for Puppet).

Come be both puppet and puppeteer on October 18 as we learn how to practice asana by means of suspended ropes. Working with ropes allows us to practice more difficult asanas with relative ease, and due to the traction and the repetitive movement in and out of poses, it helps us open the shoulders and chest and create a suppleness in the spine and body

Join us this Autumn for an enriching seasonal experience, as we utilize diverse tools and techniques to support dropping into deep states of embodiment. In Chinese theory, Autumn is the season for drawing nourishing energy inward, while connecting to ascending yin that strengthens the lungs.

We use Katonah Yoga Restorative shapes in combination with overtone-rich sounds. Using formal setups, hands-on adjustments, and props as boundaries, we scaffold physical and emotional structure, freeing imagination to inhabit the natural breath. Instruments like chimes, singing bowls, and gongs join with this dynamic environment, guiding attention deeper into form. When mind and body connect in this way, breath and energy move effortlessly, evoking ease and safety, and inviting new layers of psycho-somatic release.

Each participant will receive a uniquely personal experience guided by three facilitators. Our nervous systems harmonize in time, empowering you to leave renewed, restored, and with the harvest of a greater sense of internal peace.

The abdomen represents not only our physical center, but also our emotional seat. Chronic hardening or tensing of the abdomen can have deleterious effects both physically and psychologically. In this workshop, we will spend some time “mapping” the various layers of abdominal muscles, learn how to soften the superficial layers of the abdomen, create extension along the sides of the trunk, and arrive at the deeper, innermost layers of the abdominal muscles. From a state of softness, traction and spinal length, we will learn how to tone these deeper muscles to bring a healthy strength and support to our posture, exploring the balance between abdominal strength and suppleness.

This is an opportunity to learn what poses can help you remain calm and collected, cool and even-keeled in the midst of NYC’s summer swelter. We will open, lengthen, luxuriate, and cool off in supported chest openers, forward bends and inversions. We will end with some pranayama to make the mind as deep and serene as a mountain lake.

The pelvic floor is suspended between the p***s, ileum (hip bones), sacrum and coccyx (tailbone). The health of our lower abdominal/pelvic organs depends on the tone and elasticity of our pelvic floor and the placement of the sacrum and coccyx. In this workshop, we will align the pelvis and tone the pelvic floor by focusing in various asanas on the muscles surrounding the pelvis (including the pelvic, hip, leg and abdominal muscles). A special emphasis will be placed on Tadasana, Sirsasana and Sarvangasana.

Join us this Summer for an enriching seasonal experience, as we utilize diverse tools and techniques to support dropping into deep states of embodiment.
In Chinese theory, Summer expands us into the fullness of the heart, our pinnacle of radiance, joy, and expression, as well as being a time to engage in community and celebrate relationships. The element of Summer is fire, which activates our totality of creativity and interconnection. It’s the season to experience the expansiveness of our transformational cycles.
We use Katonah Yoga Restorative shapes in combination with overtone-rich sounds to support the breath with postures that use formal setups, hands-on adjustments, and props as boundaries to scaffold physical and emotional structure. The instruments join with this dynamic environment, guiding attention deeper into the form. When the mind and body connect in this way, breath and energy move effortlessly, evoking ease and safety, and inviting new layers of psycho-somatic release.
Each participant will receive a uniquely personal experience guided by three facilitators. Chemistry and neurology transform in each posture supported by blocks, blankets, and straps, accompanied by chimes, tuning forks, singing bowls, and gongs. Leave energized, elevated, and engaged with the present moment.

06/06/2025

No matter where you are in your yoga journey, techniques for longevity and engaging with the practice in a dynamic, well-rounded way are always worthwhile. Over this weekend-long training, you will be immersed in metaphor and imagination to broaden your frame of reference for yoga and develop an engaging experience of embodiment.
We will start by learning the foundational maps of Katonah Yoga®, which explore the mechanics of physical postures, the Taoist philosophy of the energetic body, personal narratives, and much more.

Building upon these maps as tools, we will take them into the weekend to thoughtfully engage with our physical practice & discuss how to make a life-long yoga practice sustainable. We will do this via the formality of the asana practice and explore the ideas held within metaphors of Katonah Yoga®.

Finally, we will conclude with a day of looking at the more subtle aspects of the practice. A complete asana class will lead us to explore the theory and mechanics of breath practice and techniques for meditation.

All are welcome: beginners and experienced practitioners. Yoga is for everyone.

We will cover:
· Katonah yoga® techniques for functional postures
· Imaginative embodiment practices during asana and breathwork
· Katonah yoga’s theory: the magic square, the seasonal cycle, and metaphor of “the body as a house” to awaken a rich internal experience.

Join Shaina on the mat to raise funds and awareness for The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) in honor of her father, Robert, who passed away from complications due to Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) in 2020. FTD is the most common form of dementia for people under 60 and presents different symptoms, often leading to lengthy or incorrect diagnosis. AFTD aims to raise awareness, fund research, as well as provide support and advocacy for those impacted. Shaina found AFTD integral to her journey with FTD as it brought together a community of support during some very difficult years. The classes will be centered in the Katonah Yoga practice, with some anecdotal tunes and stories along the way to honor Robert’s memory. All of Shaina’s proceeds will go to AFTD. Can’t make it?
