Cracked lips that won’t heal? It may not just be dryness. 👄
Many patients assume the cracks at the corners of their mouth are from dehydration, cold weather, or licking their lips too much. But often it’s something called angular cheilitis, a common condition caused by yeast or bacteria that thrives in the warm, moist corners of the mouth.
In our office, we frequently treat this with a prescription antifungal such as nystatin to clear the infection and help the tissue heal quickly.
But we can also look at the bigger picture. Recurring angular cheilitis can sometimes be linked to things like:
• Imbalances in the oral microbiome
• Nutrient deficiencies (especially B vitamins, iron, and zinc)
• Immune or gut health imbalances
Holistic support strategies may include:
✨ Increasing B-vitamin–rich foods (leafy greens, eggs, legumes)
✨ Supporting gut health with probiotic foods
✨ Reducing excess sugar and refined carbs that feed yeast
✨ Staying well hydrated and supporting healthy saliva flow
The key is treating the infection and addressing the underlying environment that allowed it to happen in the first place.
If you’ve had cracks at the corners of your mouth that keep coming back, it may be worth getting an assessment.
Listen to your body. And if your mouth is sending you signals, we’re here to help interpret them—with care, not judgment.
