Cholesterol is a biomarker not a character trait.

And the most important update in the cardiometabolic conversation is this:

It’s not only about **total cholesterol**. We need to look at your lipoproteins(the particles that carry cholesterol through the blood).

Here’s what that means clinically:

• **LDL-C** tells us how much cholesterol is being carried
• **ApoB** tells us how many plaque-forming particles are circulating (LDL, VLDL, IDL, Lp(a))
• **Triglycerides (TG)** often reflect metabolic health and can be elevated with insulin resistance, genetics, alcohol, stress, and dietary patterns
• **ApoA-I** is associated with HDL particles and cholesterol transport but “high HDL” alone is not a guarantee of protection

So if you’ve ever felt confused by your lipid panel… you’re not alone. And if you’ve ever felt ashamed of your numbers… that’s something we actively reject. No shame here.

At **Maya Feller Nutrition**, we look at the full picture:
labs + family history + lifestyle + access + culture, we understand that your health isn’t built in a vacuum.

✨ Want personalized support improving your cardiometabolic markers (without fear-based food rules)?

Beloved and heritage foods are not the barrier to health.

At Maya Feller Nutrition, we take a culturally inclusive, evidence-based approach because health does not require eating from a single cultural lens.

Across communities, traditional meals often provide:
✔️ fiber
✔️ phytonutrients
✔️ protein
✔️ satisfaction

All of which support cardiometabolic health; including blood sugar balance, blood pressure support, and cholesterol management.

When beloved foods are labeled “unhealthy,” people lose access to sustainable nutrition patterns that actually work long-term.

Your traditions are not something to erase.
They are and should be a part of the solution.

Gut health has become a marketing category. Don’t get caught up in the hype.

Your microbiome doesn’t require a $70 probiotic to function.

What it does respond to consistently:

✔️ Dietary fiber, which serves as fuel for beneficial gut microbes and supports short-chain fatty acid production (key for gut and metabolic health).
✔️ Dietary diversity, especially plant diversity, which is associated with greater microbial diversity.
✔️ Regular eating patterns, which support gut motility and blood sugar regulation.

Fermented foods can contribute live microbes and have been shown to increase microbiome diversity in some so add them if you enjoy them.

At Maya Feller Nutrition, we focus on sustainable patterns: fiber-forward meals, culturally relevant foods, and realistic routines not just supplement stacks.

Spring brings longer days, shifts in routine, and more variety in produce.

At **Maya Feller Nutrition**, we think of seasonal eating as an opportunity to recenter rather than trying to overhaul everything.

As the growing season expands, so can your options.

Seasonal nutrition is about responding to changes in appetite, environment, and availability while making small, sustainable adjustments that support energy, digestion, and metabolic balance throughout the year.

No rigid rules.
No extreme protocols.
Just practical, culturally inclusive nourishment that fits your life.

If you’ve been told “avoid UPFs at all costs,” you’re not alone. Social media has turned a flawed research tool into a fear tool.

Here’s the nuance:

NOVA is a system that groups foods by degree and purpose of processing AND it is not a accurate “health score”. When you take a look you’ll see foods lumped together like packaged bread and candy yet they have very different nutrition profiles.

Yes, there’s real evidence linking high intakes of added sugars, fats and salts with worse health outcomes in population studies. And to be clear I’m not advocating or recommending those foods be the center of your plate.

What I am saying is you need to nourish your body on a regular and consistent basis. And the takeaway isn’t panic.

At Maya Feller Nutrition, we focus on what’s clinically useful:

✅ build a pattern with more whole and minimally processed foods when you can
✅ choose convenient foods that are nutrient dense and support your health when you need them
✅ consider time, budget, access, disability, caregiving, and stress, because these shape eating, not “willpower”

Food is not a purity test. It’s part of a life.

Nutrition advice spreads quickly online but speed isn’t the same as science.

In clinical practice, we evaluate whether recommendations:

• improve labs over time
• support mental and emotional wellbeing
• respect culture and lived experience
• are realistic and sustainable

If guidance requires extreme restriction, ignores access to food, or harms your relationship with eating, it may not support long-term health or nourish your body no matter how popular it is.

You deserve nuance.
You deserve context.
You deserve evidence.

Language matters.

When we label food as “clean,” we imply that other foods are “dirty.” That framing shifts nutrition from physiology to morality and that’s where problems begin.

In my clinical experince (and the research suopports this) I’ve found that rigid food rules and moralized eating patterns are associated with higher rates of anxiety, guilt, and disordered eating behaviors.

Health is not about purity.

It’s about adequacy, flexibility, and patterns that support both physical and mental wellbeing.

At Maya Feller Nutrition, we focus on sustainable, culturally inclusive, evidence-based nutrition without shame.

If you’re ready to move away from food rules and toward support, work with a Maya Feller Nutrition Registered Dietitian .

All or a portion of the sessions may be covered by your health insurance and / or eligible to use HSA/ FSA.
