Toxic exposures—toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and electromagnetic fields (EMFs)—pervade our indoor environments, diets, and the products that we use everyday.
Some of these chemicals contaminate our indoor air. In fact, indoor levels of some pollutants can be two to five times higher, and occasionally more than 100 times higher, than outdoor levels. Even in the most industrialized cities. (EPA 2009)
Some of these toxic exposures also make their way into our bodies. In fact, 300+ chemicals are commonly found in American adults (CDC 2012c).
The good news is: Small changes can hack toxic exposures.
For example, using a large doormat and removing shoes before entering our homes can reduce lead dust by up to 60% (Turner, Gibson, and Reed 2010). This could also hack pesticide residues on carpets by 25% and total carpet dust by 33%. According to dust researcher John Roberts, effective cleaning and using doormats may reduce an infant’s dust exposure by 90 to 98% (Washington Toxics Coalition 2000).
