A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, leading to brain damage. There are two main types: ischemic stroke, caused by a blood clot, and hemorrhagic stroke, caused by bleeding in the brain. A transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a mini-stroke, is a temporary blockage that serves as a warning sign. Stroke is a medical emergency — fast action saves lives. Remember the signs with the acronym F.A.S.T.: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911. Quick treatment can reduce the risk of lasting brain damage or death.
