In Yogic texts, the body contains the cosmos, and the cosmos is the body itself. The primordial elements are located in the body at each of the first five chakras. They are used as points of pranic focus and meditation to contemplate the nature of Reality. By understanding how to use the breath to focus the mind on these points, we can cultivate a somatic understanding of the the five elements and their correspondences in the body.

Think of the nervous system as the electrical circuitry of the body. The most important thing to do with any electrical system is to ground the wires. Within the body that means working on the ground floor of our personal abode, the realm of safety, stability, substance and equilibrium. Once we are plugged in and grounded, currency can start flowing.

Restorative yoga is an effort in reformation not relaxation because as it turns out it actually takes a tremendous amount of doing to achieve a state of being. So rather than relaxing into a formless shape our goal is to build a form that is organized and well measured so that within the safety of that structure we can well and truly release the effort of doing to move into a state of being. That’s what we mean when we say freedom in confinement. The sanctuary of the containment gives us the wings to fly 🕊️

MISSION

We practice yoga to broaden the mind and develop the imagination. Consider the body as a house; the mind is the body’s occupant, that implicit, but most powerful, aspect of a self. The practice is a dialogue between mind and body, mediated by the breath; one’s internal atmosphere and the cosmic material that it receives, contains and uses. We practice yoga to alter our psychology by reorganizing our physiology. Yoga engages our body in a physical debate between forms that are personal, habitual, and largely unconscious, and forms that are archetypal, measured, and conscious. By reforming our body’s unconscious habits and introducing more informed and efficient patterns, yoga becomes origami for the body. As we fold and unfold, we develop dimension rather than engaging in the binary struggle between tight and loose. In this way we set up conditions for greater self-knowledge and a more expansive vision, which leads to personal change. This physical insurgence, infused with spirit, is our mission.
