Doctors Council SEIU

Doctors Council SEIU Doctors Council: A United Voice for Doctors, Our Patients, & the Communities We Serve. It’s a role we take seriously, and one we’re proud of.

We are the Doctors Council - the country's largest and oldest union of attending physicians. We believe in quality, affordable, and safe health care as a basic human right and social good, accessible to all, regardless of insurance, economic status, ability to pay, race, ethnicity, citizenship or residency status, language spoken, or diagnosis. In a time when health care is rapidly transforming, it is our mission to ensure that the voices of frontline doctors and our patients are heard and respected when decisions about health care delivery are made. As advocates for our patients, we reach out into the communities where we work to enhance the doctor-patient relationship and ensure that our patients’ voices are heard, and that our patients are involved in their care decisions. Increasingly, we serve as advocates on behalf of all the people whose lives we touch when they need care. We work to ensure equal and timely access to patient care services in our communities, and work to remove barriers to or disparities in health care, especially in low-income, medically underserved, immigrant, and communities of color. In our traditional role as a doctors' union, we work to win contracts that recognize the valuable work of our members, improve the patient care experience, and create an environment where doctors and patients are treated with dignity and respect.

Today, at the State House, Primary care physicians from Mass General Brigham (MGB), organized with Doctors Council SEIU, along with patients and medical students, shared powerful firsthand perspectives on the realities facing doctors at MGB and why legislative action matters now.

Thank you to the event sponsors Rep. Kerans, Sen. Feeney, and Sen. Lewis for standing with MGB physicians and helping elevate this ongoing primary care crisis.

Now it’s time to act: We’re calling on legislators to urge MGB to respect the vote, recognize the union, and begin bargaining now.

As physicians and union members, we mourn ICU nurse Alex Pretti’s death by federal agents in Minneapolis and demand accountability, transparency, and policies that protect community safety rather than spread fear.

For our members in the New York area, we encourage you to join NYSNA nurses and other allied healthcare workers at a vigil for Alex Pretti, which will be held at 423 East 23rd Street, VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, on Thursday January 29th from 5pm to 6pm.

Doctors Council SEIU members and allies stand in solidarity with the people of Minnesota under the banner: ICE OUT! National Day of Truth and Freedom.

We are outraged by the killing of Renee Nicole Good and all affected by ICE agents’ occupation in Minneapolis. We stand with the Good Family and the people of Minnesota, and call for accountability, transparency, and policies that protect community health, safety, and dignity.

ICE has no place in our communities and hospitals.

ICE out! Care in!

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to justice, dignity, and equality. As healthcare workers and union members, we know this truth remains urgent today: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” We continue the fight for a healthcare system that puts patients, workers, and communities first.

Photo, 1958: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after being discharged from Harlem Hospital in Manhattan after he underwent life-saving surgery led by Dr. Aubre de Lambert Maynard, an immigrant from Guyana, who was a clinical professor of surgery at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Harlem Hospital.

Doctors Council stands with NYSNA nurses!

Today, we joined the picket line to demand safe staffing, dignified healthcare benefits, and safe
workplaces for those who care for New Yorkers every day.

Hospitals can afford to do better for patients and for workers.

Solidarity with NY nurses.

…And we love firefighters too!
