Center for Drug Use and HIV Research (CDUHR) Generating Knowledge Through Transdisciplinary Research The Center's theme is "An Interdisciplinary Approach to HIV and Other Infectious Diseases."

The Center for Drug Use and HIV Research (CDUHR), funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse [P30 DA011041], is the first center for the socio-behavioral study of drug use and HIV in the United States. The Center is dedicated to increasing the understanding of the drug use-HIV/AIDS epidemic, particularly among high-risk individuals. The Center facilitates the development of timely new research efforts and disseminates information to researchers and service providers. It provides a research infrastructure to assist affiliated faculty, investigators and staff conducting HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases research among drug users at the New York University, the National Development and Research Institutes (NDRI), Beth Israel Medical Center's Chemical Dependency Institute and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

In this month’s journal issue of Health Affairs, Mano Cano and coauthors from Arizona State University, Boston University, and Boston Medical Center examine adolescent opioid use disorder (OUD) and find that nationally, only 31 percent of adolescents with OUD reported receiving treatment in the past year.

A new index measures the extent and depth of addiction stigma --
"Shatterproof Addiction Stigma Index ...Quantifying the extent and depth of negative perceptions of individuals with substance-use disorders — not only among the public but also among employers, health care professionals, family members, and even those with substance-use disorders themselves — is the first step toward changing them."

Addiction stigma interferes with treatment and recovery. It can't be overcome without knowing its extent. A new index is one place to start.
