Sexual side effects AFTER discontinuing an SSRI? Does that actually happen?

I get a lot of questions from people on this platform asking about PERMANENT sexual side effects from SSRIs (antidepressants).

Post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD) appears to be present for some after discontinuation of SSRI. It’s a diagnosis of exclusion meaning that all other causes must be excluded first. In animal studies, they suggest that SSRIs might cause permanent sexual dysfunction after ending an SSRI exposure at a young age but not in adulthood in rats. No randomized control trials in humans showed this side effect.

What I can say is to this point is that in my practice, having treated hundreds of people on SSRIs, I’ve never seen PSSD and neither have many of my colleagues when asked about this as well.

🧑🏽‍⚕️Bottom line- tell your doctor if you think you are experiencing any side effects from a medication. Not everything you read online might be something you have to be concerned about as there may be very little real data or evidence to support it. This is why it’s extremely important to have a doctor whose advice and expertise you trust. That’s my advice for any doctor you have in any speciality not just psychiatry 🤝

Do you ever feel like a phony? That you are fooling others and wonder how people can trust you with the responsibilities you are given?

We all have some self doubt at times, that’s “normal.” Imposter syndrome is having a more extreme level of self doubt. It is like self doubt on steroids

If you constantly attribute your success to EXTERNAL factors such as luck or knowing the right people rather than internal factors such as knowledge and skills, you are not going to be able to internalize your success. Ever.

Taking steps to appreciate your self worth, and reminding yourself of your strengths, are important if you want to grow and flourish at whatever it is you are striving to achieve. This isn’t always easy to do but practice over time can help.

One way I do this is to replace self doubt thoughts in the moment (you have to first catch yourself having these thoughts) with thoughts about my strengths then thinking of examples of when I’ve been successful at things that were challenging

Thanks for a beautifully written piece and for including me in it 🙏🏾 This article addresses a question many of us have likely wondered during the pandemic as we all are universally dealing with this stressor

As the pandemic continues, many of us are coping differently and there are many reasons as to why this is the case. On top of a pandemic, most of us have also have had other struggles and challenges that make it even more difficult to cope as effectively as we might otherwise under less stressful circumstances

Check out the article for great information and tips on how to cope more effectively

I had the honor of speaking at the Psychiatry Grand Rounds at Virginia Commonwealth University, my alma mater, on Friday. It truly was was such a special event for me to be able to speak 10+ years after graduating. Thank you to for being interested in this topic, making the introduction and speaking openly about your feelings on the topic 🙏🏾

The topic was Social Media & Psychiatry and the best part of the grand rounds (in my opinion) was the lively discussion afterwards 👏🏽 The separation of professional and personal identity is something most of us recognize is impossible especially on social media. Deciding what feels comfortable for each of us may vary greatly especially in psychiatry where boundaries are very important. Some members of the audience had very strong opinions about whether disclosing parts of your personal identity is appropriate on social media.

Would love to hear what others think about whether or not separating your professional and personal identities is possible and do you feel it’s necessary or desirable on social media? 👇🏽

When you’re faced with a setback, do you feel deflated like all your confidence has shrunk? Do you avoid a challenge because you’re uncomfortable doing it’s because it’s something you feel you’re not good at?

In the path to becoming a doctor, most of us have faced a setback or two at the least (many even more) such as not getting into medical school on the first try, not getting into your top residency choice, not becoming chief resident, the list goes on and on because there are so many challenges along the way to becoming a physician that setbacks are inevitable.

In 1985, Steve Jobs was brutally fired from the company he had founded. Jobs sold all his shares — 11% of Apple — barring ONE solitary share. This was not the action of a man planning a comeback. His next project, NeXT ended up being a flop at that time. We all know the inevitable, amazing ending with Steve Jobs and Apple. Setbacks along the way were very much present even for Steve Jobs.

Here’s how to work on this. See yourself as a work in progress. If you want to be better at public speaking, swearing off speaking up in meetings and thinking “I’m just not good at it” isn’t helpful. Instead, focus on your presentation skills and small steps you can take to master those skills. In the mental health world, this is called exposure work- systematic confrontations of a feared stimuli. Smaller exposures over time can help build confidence even if they are uncomfortable.

⭐️ Rather than beating yourself up when you don’t reach your high standards, identify specific, changeable behaviors that you can improve over time.

Very grateful and happy to have received my second dose of the Moderna COVID vaccine today 🙏🏾
Some things to be aware of with the vaccine:

💉 Moderna vaccine is 94.1% effective at preventing COVID-19 illness in people who received two doses who had no evidence of being previously infected

💉 Side effects such as fever, chills, tiredness, and headache are more common after the 2nd dose of the vaccine
I’ll be sharing on my stories how I feel today and tomorrow after having received the 2nd dose

3 MYTHS about antidepressants I commonly hear:

💊 Antidepressants are “happy pills”. If you take one, you’ll automatically be happy. This is not true. It takes about 4-6 weeks to begin to see improvement in symptoms and that improvement is what leads you to feel you can start to do the things that depression made it difficult to do like brush your teeth or exercise
💊 If you start taking an antidepressant, you’ll get addicted to it. There is no addictive properties in antidepressants and this you do not need higher dosages to achieve the same effect or have cravings for the medication.
💊 Antidepressants will change your personality. Antidepressants may make you feel less depressed and/or anxious which might subsequently make you respond to situations differently, think differently and feel differently. This might come across to others and yourself as a change but rather the medication is doing it’s job

This year because of the very recent Capitol attack makes today even more of a reason to stop and pause to appreciate the birth and life of MLK. The flashes of symbols of racial terror we saw at the Capitol in an attempt to interfere with the democratic process is unnerving to put it mildly. MLK gave his life trying to make democracy accessible to all

More than ever I hope that we as a country can stop being so polarized, and respect other’s opinions and differences regardless of political stance or beliefs.

Here is to hoping that there are many more better days to come in 2021. Thank you Martin Luther King Jr. 🙏🏾 His words will never be forgotten nor irrelevant

Picture after I just woke up today. Keeping it 💯as I felt it was only appropriate when I’m discussing how perfectionism can be detrimental to your mental health.

If you believe you have to be perfect, even the smallest insult will cause your inner voice to berate yourself and be critical no matter how hard you try. I looked at this picture a few times and almost convinced myself out of posting it because clearly it’s not a very flattering nor pretty picture of me or what my home looks like right now. That being said, this is my reality and it’s not “perfect”.

Take a moment to acknowledge whatever goal you might set for yourself right now might be difficult to achieve but also practice self-compassion because you either have it or you don’t. You either have it OR you don’t.
