As life's pressures take hold, we often get caught up in the minutiae of each day and lose sight of what's important. Take time to laugh.

This NY Times article echoes what TCM practitioners and Taoists over the age have already known for centuries: it's important to get your rest and take breaks/naps! Even just a few minutes several times a day of closing your eyes and having quiet time, or taking a short nap when you are tired, can go a long way towards conserving your Qi and improving cognitive and physical performance. Sleeping in for an extra hour or two is far more beneficial for increasing your energy and metabolism than getting up early to go to the gym.

To be at your peak, don’t work so much.

Read on for how to use the energy of the Year of the Snake for your change and transformation!

Happy Lunar New Year to all our friends on Facebook! Some interesting facts about Snakes, reposted from TCM Zone:

Here are things to consider in the Year of the Snake:

Reinventing:
Snakes shed their skin, and so can you. Whether reinventing yourself, your practices, your services or your organization, 2013 will be a favorable year for makeovers.

Making and saving money:
The attribute most often associated with the snake is cunning. That means not only knowing how to connive to make money but also how to be smart and squirrel it away.

Planning strategically:
The snake is considered introspective and intelligent, so this is a particularly good year to look at the plan for your practice.

Striking fast:
Snakes move at lightning speeds to catch their prey.
You shouldn't go off in all directions, and won't if you've done that strategic planning. But when good opportunities arise, move quickly.

Being patient:
Snakes sleep quietly in the warm sun, limiting their expenditure of resources until just the right opportunity, or prey, comes along.

Why is Qigong better than exercise not just for your mind and spirit but also your body? Read Traditional Chinese Medicine World Foundation's posting below to find out more!

WHY IS QIGONG BETTER THAN EXERCISE? Many people want to know the difference between Qigong and physical exercise. Generally speaking, physical exercise can only make your physical body change. It is impossible to go beyond the physical without adding a practice like Qigong. There's no doubt that exercise can help you, and even fix your physical body and make it stronger. But physical exercise, especially if strenuous, cannot sustain you for a lifetime. Simpler things, such as Yoga, Taiji, Qigong, and swimming can.

Qigong is about Qi, or your life force, an invisible force that is every bit as real as gravity, earth magnetics, wind, and more. As such, its power is limitless. By working from the inside out, Qigong helps to improve your body's functions, balancing your emotions and sharpening your intuition. It helps you become calm naturally, and it makes you stronger inside and out. Qigong opens up your intuition, increases your Qi and the flow of Qi, and helps you discover your unlimited potential, your special inheritance locked away inside, allowing your body, mind, and spirit function as a whole system.

Great tip for wintertime and the holiday season...

TCM HEALING TIP: In the winter there is less light so it’s natural to go to bed earlier and get up a little later. The problem is for most people their lives are not so flexible to allow this. You can choose to go more with what your body is telling you and change things so you have a little more time to relax and rest.

Take some time to meditate and feel peaceful. Don’t get caught in your mind and in what you think the outside world is telling you to do. You don’t “have” to do anything but follow your body’s wisdom and what your heart and spirit tells you. Remember, life is for the fulfillment of your enjoyment.

IS THERE A MALE MENOPAUSE? The short answer is yes. Men also go through a transition as they age. It can appear very different than a woman's experience of menopause. When men start to experience symptoms related to aging (such as memory loss, back issues, and urinary and sexual function problems), it signals that their bodies are out of balance, especially their Kidney function.

When TCM looks at men's health issues, particularly aging difficulties, it always looks at Kidney function. This organ's main function is to store energy and supply power for the whole body. Without sufficient Kidney Qi, it's impossible for men to be strong and have good health.

One practical way for men (and women) to create harmony among their internal organs is to practice the Four Energy Gates. This Qigong series stimulates the body to function at a higher level. Yet, if a condition of imbalance has gone too long or too far, a man needs additional healing support in the form of acupuncture and herbal therapy.
