"Self-evidence gathered through personalized trials offers a new way forward for patients who are vulnerable to hidden triggers that permeate their real world," explains Nicole Bundy, MD, MPH, FACR. Dr. Bundy, a rheumatologist and Mymee's Medical Director, was recently published in Rheumatology Network.

Rheumatic autoimmune disease patients need self-evidence when prescribed medications do not resolve their symptoms and activity limitations. 40% of rheumatic autoimmune disease patients are non-responders in randomized controlled trials for rheumatic autoimmune biologics as defined by continued or worsening disease activity at the trial endpoint. In the real world, the lines are more difficult to draw for patients who experience continued or worsening disease activity.

How does self-evidence help? Rheumatic autoimmune disease patients who do not respond to drugs and diets often have high and unique sensitivities to their food and environment. Making behavior changes without personal data can be dangerous. Correlations emerge by closely tracking a patient's day-to-day symptoms, meals, and other details. Once individuals can tie their specific symptoms directly to hidden triggers within their food and environment, they can safely adapt around them based on their data and life preferences, with specialized support.

With Mymee complementing their clinician's care, patients achieve clinically significant improvement in ten health-related quality-of-life measures, like pain interference, cognitive function, fatigue, and ability to manage symptoms. Hear more from Dr. Bundy on Mymee's personalized trials here:

Featured in Rheumatology Network, Tonya Hinton-Green explores her journey with – from debilitating symptoms, surgeries, job loss, and being homebound to finally being empowered to manage her flares.

Tonya, a resident ambassador for the Lupus Foundation of America and a Mymee program participant, has been in the spotlight for her advocacy on behalf of lupus patients and lupus awareness. In addition to her story in Rheumatology Network, Tonya’s abstract was presented at the American College of Rheumatology’s Convergence event just last month. Tonya uses her story about lupus to let others with the disease know that “it is possible to feel better.”

Tonya advocates for each lupus patient to understand how diet, sleep, stress, toxins, and other specific triggers hidden in food or environment play a role in disease activity. She explains that with lupus, “the uncertainty about bad days that just come and go” is disempowering. But, emphasizes Tonya, you can manage your symptoms with the right tools. “Once you can connect the dots to figure out your triggers, it’s like finally solving a big mystery so you can start living life on your terms,” she says.

We applaud Tonya for her tireless dedication to lupus patients and the improvement of their care. Patient perspectives are critical to the future of rheumatic disease treatment, especially in light of growing evidence supporting self-evidence-driven interventions. Please join us in celebrating Tonya and recognizing her journey with lupus by reading her story at Rheumatology Network: https://www.rheumatologynetwork.com/view/patient-perspective-support-program-helps-patients-with-lupus-manage-their-disease-improve-qol.

Mymee’s Mette Dyhrberg, Founder and CEO, and Nicole Bundy, MD, MPH, FACR, joined Dr. Kara Fitzgerald on the New Frontiers podcast to talk about autoimmune disease and long COVID interventions. In the episode "What to do When Autoimmune Patients Fail Standard Elimination Diets," Dr. Bundy and Mette discuss hidden, unique dietary and environmental triggers – and how identifying them makes symptom relief and management possible. We encourage you to listen, especially if you’ve tried popular elimination diets without improvement. The symptom-trigger relationships in autoimmune disease and long COVID patients are complex, and solutions cannot be one size fits all.

Popular "anti-inflammatory" diets may be helpful for some, but we know when it comes to autoimmunity, there is no "one-size-fits-all" diet solution. Aside from often being overly restrictive, they can needlessly remove healthful foods from a person's diet or make them feel worse. Hear more about the AIP diet (and what it overlooks) from Mymee's Jen Costa, a certified health coach, and holistic nutritionist, on Wednesday, August 3 at 6 PM EDT via Zoom.
