🤳🏼Suffer from “tech neck”?

💻 If you work on screens for much of the day and feel that you “hold tension” in your neck and shoulders, you likely suffer from “tech neck.”

Working on screens requires your body to be in the same position for long periods and also encourages a slouched posture. (Phones and laptops are particular bad because the monitor and keyboard are so close together).

🙃Depending on your job it may be impossible to avoid!

Yes, you can do a lot to improve the ergonomics of your work station (like getting a separate keyboard and mouse for your laptop). But sometimes that’s not enough, and if avoiding it all together is not an option…

⭐️ Getting acupuncture regularly helps to release existing tension and restore range of motion, and prevent pain and headaches that go along with tech neck.

Acupuncture works by:
🌀Releasing trigger points
⚡️Triggering the release of natural pain killers and anti-inflammatory agents
☯️Addressing underlying imbalances (according to Chinese Medicine) to address any related issues like insomnia and stress and anxiety
☯️We also use cupping and gua sha to clear stagnation, decompress tissue, break up adhesions and promote healing

*Here’s your reminder to take a break from your screen* ❤️

☯️Traditional Chinese Medicine acu-points: address underlying health imbalances such as sleep or digestion issues which can contribute to chronic pain

🚨Infrared heat: warmth that penetrates the muscles to relax and heal tissues

🌿Topical herbal liniments: Chinese herbs applied to the low back that have a slight analgesic effect and promote tissue healing

🌀Cupping: increases blood flow to and stimulates healing of targeted tissues

Does rainy weather make your muscles and joints ache, or cause a flare up of an old or chronic injury?

In Chinese Medicine the elements in our environment are thought of as analogous to aspects of the body. “Damp” (wet or humid) weather can aggravate an imbalance called internal dampness. If your symptoms show up with rain this is a clue that you may have internal dampness. Chinese Medicine provides tools to address this which includes acupuncture, moxa, and internal and external herbs. A qualified practitioner of Chinese medicine can address internal dampness as part of a holistic approach to improving health and relieving pain.

Here are a some things you can do on your own:

-Dress for the weather to stay warm and dry. If you wash your hair in the morning, make sure it’s dry before you go out, wear proper footwear so you don’t end up with soggy socks all day, and make sure you have a raincoat and/or umbrella ready. This may sound obvious, but the key here is planning ahead!

-Try an epsom salt bath at the end of the day to warm and relax muscles.

-Use a heating pad on any particularly achey areas for 15 min up to 3x/day.

-Add gently warming spices like cinnamon, ginger and turmeric to your food or drinks. Avoid extra spicy/greasy foods as this can contribute to internal dampness.

We don't treat turtles, but we do treat jaw pain and tension!

🐢🐢🐢
“While acupuncture isn’t commonly performed, we have used this treatment successfully in the past with other reptiles like snakes and lizards,” Dr. Aimee Berliner, the director of Animal Health and Welfare at the National Aquarium said. “We’re so pleased to see Bassoon’s progress and look forward to the day when we can return him to his ocean home.”

Bassoon initially received daily acupuncture treatments but within the past few weeks his progress has improved to the point where the acupuncture is no longer necessary, staff said."

A sea turtle that couldn’t open its mouth is finally on the road to improved health after undergoing acupuncture treatment at the National Aquarium.

~Acupuncture for Osteoarthritis~

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and involves wearing down of the protective cartilage that cushions bone against bone in joints. Most people experience osteoarthritis at some point as they age and it’s often referred to as “wear and tear” on the joints.

Symptoms may include
-Pain
-Stiffness
-Swelling
-Tenderness
-Loss of range of motion or flexibility
-A grating sensation in the joint

Osteoarthritis most often shows up in the hands, spine, knees, and hips.

Needles to say, it can seriously affect your quality of life!

Did you know that acupuncture is known to be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis?

The World Health Organization classifies acupuncture as an appropriate treatment for osteoarthritis, and there are numerous clinical studies that support the use of acupuncture for osteoarthritis.

🐢Slowing down is sometimes the best way to speed up🐇

Do you ever feel like you need to go faster and harder all the time in order to feel productive?

In the case of our health, slowing down is often what is actually needed and can even accelerate healing in the long run. Activities like meditation, free-writing, restorative yoga and rest-days pay off in the form of mental clarity and higher productivity in times when we need to turn the energy up.

Acupuncture applies to this too. When you come in for your acupuncture appointment, your job is basically to do nothing. You get comfortable and let the acupuncture work its magic. You get to give yourself permission to let go of all your other obligations while you are on the treatment table. Doing so only helps to enhance your treatment and accelerate your healing.

One of the benefits of regular acupuncture, besides relieving pain/balancing hormones/mood boosting/happier periods/etc, is that this moment of restoration is built into your schedule. You no longer have to worry about “doing” it. It becomes a habit you look forward to.

In what ways are you slowing down and seeing it pay off? I would love to know in the comments!

🌜 Happy Winter Solstice ✨

🌚 Last night was the longest night of the year, marking the first official day of winter.

⚡️ Here are a few practical tips from Chinese Medicine for winter days:

-Drink warm drinks. Ice is generally considered detrimental to digestion in Chinese Medicine, but especially so when the climate is cold. The stomach needs warmth to break down food and you can give it a little support by sipping on tea or even just hot water.

-Eat cooked vegetables and warming foods. (In the same vein as the previous tip). Raw vegetables are considered cold energetically; it takes your body more energy to break them down. So opt for cooked vegetables when possible and incorporate warming spices like cinnamon, ginger and turmeric as well as soups and broths.

-Keep your neck covered. Cold wind on your neck can make you more susceptible to catching a common cold or taxing your immune system. Make sure to layer up and wear a scarf and hat to keep the cold air off your neck, and shoulders. It's a good idea to keep your feet warm when at home too; avoid walking around barefoot on cold floors; especially if you suffer from any foot issues.

-Use a humidifier at night. I am a bit of a broken record with this piece of advise, but if you have old school heating in your home (as many of us do in NYC), you are often dealing with a hot and DRY home. To combat dry skin and avoid aggravating your upper respiratory system use a humidifier at night in the bedroom.

-Focus on more "yin" activities. Winter is a yin time of year. Think of the energy of a bear hibernating in the woods; that's the energy you’re going for. It's a time to look inward and rest. Some good yin activities include meditation, restorative yoga, warm baths, and curling up with a good book.

💙 Getting acupuncture is also an excellent yin activity 💆🏽‍♀️

How are you showing up for yourself today?⠀
⠀
Showing up can look like a a lot of different things. It could be a workout via zoom, flossing even when your tired and want to go to bed, showing up to acupuncture, or going outside for a short walk and some fresh air. Health requires persistence, dedication, and adaptability. The world changes, our work and home life changes, our bodies also inevitably change, and so our habits around health have to remain adaptable.⠀
⠀
Here are some tips from us at Gotham Holistic that we hope you find useful on your healthful journey:⠀
⠀
-When you try something new, give it time to show results before you assess whether it is a good fit for you or not.⠀
⠀
-Reflect regularly on what is working and not working for you. Creating a schedule or ritual for this can be helpful.⠀
⠀
-Balance "yin" and "yang" activities. For example, if you are making a new effort to up your physical activity, make sure to balance it with a restorative practice like meditation or stretching. ⠀
⠀
-Seek guidance from your community and/or a professional if you are feeling stuck.⠀
⠀
-Avoid comparing your journey to others, and honor any feelings that come up. ⠀
⠀
-Keep a positive affirmation or two in your mind that resonates with you and helps validate your feelings and experience.⠀
