🍫🍞 Southern Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits 😋🍞🍫
Ingredients:
For the Chocolate Gravy:
½ cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups whole milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (use alcohol-free for halal)
Pinch of salt
For the Biscuits (or use store-bought for ease):
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
¾ cup buttermilk (or substitute with milk + 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice)
Directions:
Make the Biscuits:
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the buttermilk until just combined. Do not overmix.
Turn the dough onto a floured surface, gently fold it a few times, and pat it to about ¾-inch thick. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter.
Place biscuits on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
Make the Chocolate Gravy:
In a medium saucepan (off the heat), whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt.
Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth and well combined.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens to a gravy-like consistency (about 5–7 minutes).
Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
Serve:
Split the warm biscuits and generously ladle the rich chocolate gravy over each half. Serve immediately for a comforting Southern treat!
