We picked out some unseen photos of the wonderful Trivia Party that was hosted by the BRC Leadership Council earlier this month. The proceeds from the event went toward supporting the Tillary Women’s Residence and women experiencing homelessness.

With three intense rounds of trivia, the attendees put their knowledge to the test! It was an engaging afternoon, hosted by Joe Austin, who was in fact one of the founding members and the then co-chair of the BRC Leadership Council.

Today the spotlight is on Megan Tejada, LMSW, Director of Learning, Administration.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares, “When I moved to New York City, I was looking for similar work that aligned with my experience and values, which led me to BRC. The organization’s mission closely matched both my personal goals and professional background, and it gave me the opportunity to apply the skills I gained in graduate school in a meaningful way.”

Her story is also deeply shaped by the women in her life, a powerful reminder of how strong role models can guide and impact our journeys. We celebrate her path and that of those women whose strength and influence continue to uplift and inspire generations to come.

This Black History Month, we have reflected on the unique history of the Inwood Sacred Site.

Following the recommendation of the Advisory Group for the Inwood Sacred Site (AGISS), BRC created a dual-purpose space: the Inwood Women’s Residence (opened doors in Oct. 2025) and the Inwood Sacred Site (under construction), to honor the land's history as a burial ground for enslaved Africans and as a Lenape ceremonial site.

Together, the space will serve as a place for healing, reflection and resilience for the community and individuals experiencing homelessness.

We are back with Part 3 of our four-part series on the deep history of the Inwood Sacred Site.

Did you know?

When BRC learned the land’s past as a burial ground for enslaved Black people and a Lenape ceremonial site, development was paused. BRC began consulting with descendants of African and Indigenous peoples, Inwood’s community residents and leaders, historians, advocates and staff. From the process, the Advisory Group for the Inwood Sacred Site (AGISS) was formed.

These efforts recognized the connection between the land’s traumatic history and the systemic racism that continues to contribute to homelessness today.

On October 7th, 2025, Inwood Women’s Residence opened its doors to offer 116 beds of short-term housing and supportive services for women experiencing homelessness. The space will also be home to The Inwood Sacred Site (under construction) to honor the land’s history as a burial ground for enslaved Africans and as a Lenape ceremonial site.
