A male giraffe can tell if a female is ready to mat£ by tast!ng her urine!
Although it may sound unusual, this behavior is completely real and is part of a biological process known as the "Flehmen response."
It all begins when the male st!mulates the female to ur!nate; then, using his tongue, he collects a sample and analyzes it by activating a specialized sensory organ located in the palate, called the vomeronasal organ. This mechanism allows him to detect specific pheromones that indicate whether the female is fertile.
This behavior is not exclusive to giraffes: many other species, such as horses, cats, and elephants, also use this technique to decipher chemical signals.
In the case of giraffes, this strategy is crucial to maximize reproductive success, as encounters between fertile individuals can be sporadic due to the vastness of their territories.
Furthermore, this chemical evaluation prevents the male from wasting energy courting females who are not ready to reproduce. 🦒
