Few fields hold greater promise for advancing human health than regenerative medicine—and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is leading the way.

Under the leadership of Sarah E. Millar, PhD, Dean for Academic and Scientific Affairs and Director of the Black Family Stem Cell Institute, Mount Sinai has launched the new Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, bringing together world-class researchers dedicated to unlocking the body’s ability to repair and regenerate itself.

Over the past six years, Dr. Millar has recruited 13 pioneering scientists from leading institutions across the globe, expanding Mount Sinai’s expertise in brain and lung regeneration, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, liver biology, epithelial science, and stem cell–based disease modeling.

Their discoveries are redefining what’s possible in regenerative medicine—laying the foundation for new treatments for conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, lung injury, aging-related disease, and more. Together, this growing community of investigators is driving breakthroughs that will change how we understand, treat, and ultimately heal the human body.

This is the future of medicine—and it’s happening here at Mount Sinai. Read more in the full report here: https://mshs.co/47sEJrR

Alongside Robert (Robbie) Samstein, MD, PhD, Mount Sinai PhD students Miriam Saffern and Natalie Vaninov are uncovering how the immune system interacts with cancer—and how those insights could lead to new ways of preventing and treating disease.

Drawn to the lab’s broad, pan-cancer focus and its connection to Mount Sinai’s Precision Immunology Institute, both students found mentorship that bridges data science, immunology, and translational medicine. Their collaborative work, recently published in Science, explored how immune genetics may reduce lung cancer risk—challenging conventional thinking about cancer prevention.

From generative models that support teaching and assessment to adaptive tools that personalize learning experiences, AI is no longer a distant concept—it’s already reshaping how we teach, learn, and think,” said Marta Filizola, PhD, Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai.

The Inaugural AI in (Bio)Medical Education: Innovation in Teaching and Learning Symposium brought together leaders in education and technology—including Stephen Harmon, EdD and José Antonio Bowen, PhD—to explore responsible and ethical integration of AI in academic and clinical settings.

With Mount Sinai already being the first U.S. medical school to provide ChatGPT Edu access for students and faculty, this event marked another milestone in shaping the future of medical and graduate education.
