DIY Powerful Herbal Cough Syrup
A traditional-style winter remedy for dry cough and lung support by Medicine Woman In The Woods
⚠️ Important Safety Note
Use extreme caution when working with hot liquids and pressure blenders.
This guide reflects traditional remedy preparation methods.
Always research ingredients thoroughly before use, especially for children.

Ingredients
Herbal Tea Base
3 tablespoons dried, crushed mullein leaf
1 heaping tablespoon whole cloves
1 cup hot (not boiling) water
Syrup Base
200 ml prepared mullein–clove tea
200 ml maple syrup
(Optional: elderberry-infused maple syrup)

Additional Components
½ ounce Purum Spirits turpentine
½ ounce 80–100 proof alcohol (rum or vodka)
Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment
NutriBullet or high-speed blender
Strainer
Strainer bag (or cheesecloth)
Sterilized 500 ml mason jar with lid
Measuring cup
Tablespoon
Eyedropper (for child dosing)

Step 1: Prepare the Mullein Tea Base
1. Add 3 tablespoons dried mullein leaf to your NutriBullet.
2. Pour in 1 cup hot (not boiling) water.
3. Secure lid tightly.
4. Blend carefully.
Steam builds pressure. Open slowly and cautiously.

Step 2: Add Cloves
1. Add 1 heaping tablespoon cloves to the mixture.
2. Blend again.
3. Open carefully due to pressure buildup.

Step 3: Strain the Tea
1. Place strainer over a bowl.
2. Line with strainer bag or cheesecloth.
3. Pour mixture through.
4. Strain thoroughly to remove all plant particles.
You now have a concentrated mullein–clove tea.

Step 4: Build the Syrup Base
1. In a sterilized 500 ml mason jar, add:
o 200 ml mullein–clove tea
2. Add:
o Approximately 200 ml maple syrup
(or elderberry-infused maple syrup if available)
Fill until near the jar’s mid-upper marking.

Step 5: Add Active Components
1. Add ½ ounce Purum Spirits turpentine.
2. Add ½ ounce 80–100 proof alcohol (rum or vodka).
Because the base is water-based and turpentine is oil-based, separation will occur.

Step 6: Shake and Combine
1. Secure lid tightly.
2. Shake gently to emulsify.
3. If mixture is still warm, shake cautiously to avoid pressure buildup.

Before Each Use
Shake well (turpentine floats to the top).
Do not drink fluids for 5–10 minutes after taking to allow throat coating.

Dosage Guidelines
For Children
¼ teaspoon (one dropper full)
For Adults
1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon as needed

Optional Flavor Enhancement
Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for improved taste.
Storage
Store in refrigerator.
Syrup will thicken over time.
Shake before each use.

Intended Use
Traditionally used for:
Dry cough
Hoarseness
Chest congestion
Lung support
Mucus mobilization
Mullein is traditionally used to soothe lungs and reduce inflammation.
Cloves provide warming properties.
Maple syrup coats the throat.

Seed starting indoors has many benefits, including an earlier harvest and extending the growing season in short-season climates. Getting the timing right when starting seeds indoors is especially important, because if plants remain in their small containers for too long, they will become root-bound and likely not do well when moved to the garden. To calculate timing, first find the average last frost date for your area, then follow these guidelines:

Weeks before last frost:
🧅 Onions & leeks: 8-10 weeks
🌶️ Peppers & Eggplant: 8-10 weeks
🍅 Tomato, Ground Cherry, & Tomatillo: 6-8 weeks
🥦 Brassicas*: 4-6 weeks
🥗 Lettuce & leafy greens: 4-6 weeks
🌼 Flowers & herbs: Generally 4-6 weeks*

*Brassicas include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, collard, kale, kohlrabi, rutabaga, turnip, and Asian greens
*Can vary widely
